I had an unfortunate thing occur with one of my mirage drives and the end of last year. I let my kids take my kayak out and the chain was loose. Well they didn't know any better an the teeth on the sprocket are worn down.

This is my first attempt at taking apart these drives. Figure its time to clean it up and put new grease in.
Found a good video on You Tube for the GT drive.

Does anyone have some things they would like to share from experience? Something I should be careful to do or not do?
Preferred marine grease I should use?
Tools that would make things easier?

Any input would be appreciated....

Yakass.....This is a first rate video!
Having converted my PA-14, V2 Mirage Drive to the GT Mirage Drive over 2 years ago, your video would have helped speed the process.
The biggest issue I had was fitting the chains to the new sprockets.....I finally got it together, but a real PITA :wink:

Thanks for the compliments on that. We'd been meaning to do it much earlier but struggled to find the time. But we figured this would help a lot of people, from people upgrading drives with GT components to those who just want to perform servicing from time to time (I do it annually).

Dr.Steelhead, there is a bit of a trick to fitting the chains. Key to it is making sure that the center chain link is positioned on the center sprocket tooth. If you get that right, the rest tends to fall into place. Mind you, I have literally done it hundreds of times, so I make it look easy. That was our part-timer staffer in the clip (I was holding the camera) and he fumbled a little

Yakass' video is excellent and you can use it with the older Drives as well -- just ignore the roller bearing parts since you won't have them on the pre-GT Drives. Notice he serviced all three shafts -- you should do the same.

Here are a few additional tips:
1. Examine your shafts for wear. If re-using the originals, you can reverse them to expose a fresh, unworn side, especially if replacing with new parts.
2. Older sprocket shafts are not marked, unlike the one shown in the video. Use a Sharpie to draw a vertical line so you will know where the flat spot is when locking it in with the Allenhead screw.
3. Don't over tighten the Allenhead lock screws or you can crack the spine. Tighten them snug only and use Locktite Blue to keep them from backing out later.
4. When reinstalling the chain cables, pre mark (Sharpie) the center link. This is the one that will fit over the master cog. Press this one first and make sure it is fully seated before proceeding further. Then the rest of the links will (almost) fall into place. It's a tight fit!
5. When doing your final cable adjustments, go from front to back -- idler first, then front then rear. Otherwise one affects the others and you have to do it over again. The "just right" tension is about 1/8" squeeze between the fingers at midpoint for the idler and front cable, about 3/16 for the rear cable. Too tight accelerates wear by causing unnecessary friction; too loose and you get cable slack which is mostly harmless but inefficient .

It's a lot easier after the first time! 8)

Wow!! I did it. Took about 3 hours with first Mirage Drive and about an hour for the second one.
