We bought 2 older Hobie Pursuit kayaks 12'. They have an oblong hole in the hull up between your legs. Therefore, water inside the kayak seeks the same level of the surrounding lake water. That means your heels (at least) get wet. Sometimes it gets deeper in the boat and sloshes up to the seat. I assume this "hole" in the hull is designed to let water back out if the boat takes on a big wave? Is there a scupper plug that would fill this hole? Could I seal it permanently?

There is a scupper plug that you can insert - just order from any dealer (part # 72009001)

Thanks for the tip! I'll order a couple. I was on Hobie website but couldn't find a plug.

Hello I just got a Pursuit, used around 2009-2010 (owner wasn't sure) and I found water has come into the inside of the boat. I drained it using the plug but am concerned about it filling as I ride. Haven't tested it out too much. I saw your posts about the plugs - did you find a plug? Did you find it helped? Any advice on that? I love the bought and want to be able to use it without worrying about filling with water too much. Thanks! -Carrie

Water will always be in the cockpit floor due to the need for a low center of gravity. water inside the hull should be minimal, but expect some to get inside... this is normal for all watercraft.

To test for possible leaks:

If your hull leaks beyond a small amount, you can find out where and repair it fairly easily.

Force air pressure inside the hull in some way. There are many possible ways to do that. By mouth, hair drier, vacuum exhaust, tire pump... whatever. DO NOT put more than a couple pounds of pressure into the hull. I prefer the vacuum exhaust. Direct the flow into the drain hole, but do not seal it tightly. Any positive pressure inside the hull will try to escape. It will escape through possible leak locations.

Mop, sponge or spray soapy water around fittings and seams that are suspect. Bubbles will be formed by the air escaping from the hull.

Look at the keels. Are they wearing through? Look at the drain plug gasket. Is there one? Is it crushed and out of place when the plug is installed? Look at the hull fittings. Look at the rod holders. Look at the mast mount hole. Freezing water in the mast and rod tubes could crack the tubes and cause leaks.

Equipment:
--vacuum with hose
--soapy water with brush
--cardboard cut-out
--tape

Procedure:
1. Cut a cardboard large enough to cover one of your hatches with a hole to accommodate your vacuum hose. Precision is not critical.

2. Open a convenient hatch and tape your cardboard over the opening. No need for it to be air tight -- this requires very little pressurization.

3. Insert one end of your hose into the outlet side of the vacuum to provide a source of air and the other through the cardboard. Tape over any large gaps. Don't worry about blowing your hull up.

4. With your vacuum exhaust blowing air into the hull, liberally paint soapy water over any suspected leak area.

Here is what the set-up may look like:

Areas that will normally leak are rudder lines, rudder handles, large hatch and non-gasketed hatches (ex: 5" screw-in hatch)

Areas that should not leak but are easy to correct (or live with) are gasketed hatches (ex: Twist and Stow) and their mounting surfaces.

Stressed areas to check as a precaution:
-- front nose of drivewell
-- cam lock areas on either side of drivewell
-- scupper cart holes
-- seat peg recesses
-- rudder mount area
-- any place that looks seriously cut, scraped, or abraded

Any leak should be easy to spot!

It's pretty hard for leaks to hide using this technique. The idea of filling your hull with water, by comparison, is slow, inefficient, poor at pinpointing leaks near the top surface and potentially stressful to the hull.

Hobie has made several improvements to minimize water entry in '07 and '08 with redesigned cable routing, cable entry points, cable tube seals and rudder controls. Still, my wife no longer stores her paperback books in the hold without some sort of bag (especially in active water).

With your left over soapy water you can finish cleaning your boat! 8)
