Hubs hitting idler pulley

Started using an old GT drive i haven't used for a while and noticed quite a substantial clunk as the hubs both contact the idler pulley on both sides on forward extension. Is this a concern other than just annoying, and also is it simply an adjustment somewhere? Drive hasn't been used in 3 years, I dont remember this happening previously.

Not to ask the obvious, but are the cables at the proper tension?

Are the hubs worn such that they are loose on the shaft?

I tightened the cables anyway,m they could have become slack overtime. Though hand operation seems no different. Buts often different to installed operation.

Actions to consider include filing a bit off hubs/chamfering outer edge of idler / adding spacer washers to hub shaft to separate them better. As it didn't do this before I suspect it could just need cables tightening or something simple.

You may have an earlier version of GT idler pulley. The first ones tended to brush against the drums at the leading edge on the forward stroke -- they were slightly fatter to accommodate the roller bearings. Hobie has since made a modification that steps down or narrows the rearmost part of the pulley so that it clears the drums.


You can ignore it or file down the rearmost portion as shown. The Hobie image above appears to be the earlier version.

I think thats what I will do. Its just weird that it never used to do that.
