I recently bought an Adventure and on my first outing I had all kinds of trouble getting the drive in.The pins on the Drive appear to be a little longer that the grooves on the locking cams.Tried loosening the screw on the cam locks but not much changed.Anybody else have this problem and how can I correct it?Lefty

Are you sure that the pins on the drive is the problem? The problem I had was I couldn't get the drive pins to sit down properly into the cam well area because the front peg(of the drive) was binding against the hull.

Once I filed this down a bit the drive just dropped right into place. I even had to do this on the spare drive that I bought.

Here's a link that refers to my problems. Be sure to scroll down until you find it. I even posted pictures for clarity.

Good Luck!

I had issues on my first trip out a week or so ago and realized that they seated best when you open the pedals as you drop them into the cams . The drive would not seat when the pedal shafts were together.

After Memorial Day weekend and a highschool graduation the following weekend I plan to try out one of the Adventures for a pre-purchase outing. I have looked for information, opinions and personal experiences having to do with mirage drives and like anything mechanical it needs some attention however, one thing that seems to be repeated quite a bit is a set screw that backs out and causes a fin to fall out of place. Not sure if it is the owners not "kicking the tires" before they load up and go out or if this is an inherent problem I can expect to encounter.

Any input? Anything from Hobie?

No, you would not expect to have this problem. It is uncommon and more specifically associated with post-factory installation of Turbofins by users. Even then, it is still uncommon. It can happen in other circumstances, but rarely. For example, if you were to strike an underwater rock hard with a fin, it could form a hairline crack in the sprocket guard along the axis of the screw, causing it to work loose. This would be highly unusual though.

If the screw is backing out, it's easy enough to recognize before anything falls out. Regular inspection of your gear is the best way to prevent problems.

I've been using the Mirage drives for over 6 years and have Turbofins mounted on the current drive, with lots of use. Never had a fin fall off.

Enjoy your new Adventure -- it's a great choice! 8)
