My 45+ year old Hobie Cat 14’s drain plug housings (not sure if that is the correct term) look like they might allow water in. They have old caulking or sealant of some type around them, but it has shrunk slightly. The housings seem tight when I tug on them. I’m repairing the boat and have never sailed it so I can’t say for sure that they leak, but they look like they might. So, should I try to unscrew them, clean off any old sealant and replace? I’m worried if I take them off that I will not be able to just screw them back in because it may damage the threads in the hull. Is that a legitimate concern? Or should I just scrape off any old caulk or sealant around the edges and recaulk (or something else) around them? I am about to sand the hulls so I can gelcoat them so should I take them off anyway because of that? If so, should I also take off the rudder assemblies and any other hardware? Will they all screw back in tight again? I’m just not sure how all this disassembly works! Are there metal threads embedded in the hulls to accept the screws? Any help would be very much appreciated!
