From Tom's post I think you need more mast rake ... but it is hard to tell since we need "actual" measurements. You see there are two different adjusters availible ... a 8 hole and a 10 hole ..... and then you can order shrouds in different lengths. Mine are in fact 2 1/2" shorter then "stock" lengths .... since w/ "stock" shrouds & 8 hole adjusters usually meant that I would end up in the very bottom adjuster hole .... w/ no more adjustment availible .... so ... you cut off the bottom "Marine Eye Terminal" (as short as possible) ... and install a new "Marine Eye Terminal" ... this reduces the shroud length by 2 1/2 inches .... this gives you more adjustment availible ... but then you need to use the 10 hole adjusters ....

Now the measurement method Tom discribed works no matter what length shrouds you have .... as does method in Phil Berman's H18 Manual ... (which is out of print and no longer easily availible .....)

Call me on my cell # (610) 717-8207 .... and I'll arrange to get you the information out of "Phil's" Manual and you can compare the methods and determine your "base-line" ......

Ok, so I used Tom's method of checking the rake and found that the "mark" on the line (from the bridle pin) landed me even with the middle of the rear crossbar (at the end of the cross bar).

Forestay has been like that since I got the boat last summer. We sailed in 25 knot winds yesterday and had to launch into the wind - I was noticing I could not point very high into the wind. Definately going to adjust this.

I am at the 4th hole down on my shrouds and the forestay is the 6th hole down on the adjuster plate (lower hole of the two on the furler, I use the upper for the shackle to attach the jib). Does this sound about right for what must be a near vertical mast?

That would be the rake I would use for 1-8 knts of wind.

In most situations I would rack back a little further, but I also sail as close to minimum weight as possible.

I bet if you went to the 5th hole on all your adjustments you would be happy.

Alot of your ability to point the boat is in where you place your weight on the boat. The H18 has so much bow volume, you can drive your bows into the water and point a little bit higher.

In higher wind like you saw, you would do best, to rake back, downhaul hard, move the jib cars towards the back of the boat, and travel out just a little bit. This will de power the boat so you can head to weather under control, and still move fairly quickly.

The one thing I do that is guaranteed to cut my rigging time in half is to firmly place a piece of Duct Tape over my mouth ! :D
