I've got a seaway 7:1 main sheet system for sale. it could easily be converted to 8:1 with a smaller block added on the upper becket and then a tie off, on a fair lead, added to the upper or reverse side of the clam cleat. nothing wrong with it at all. I upgraded to an 8:1 carbo harken system awhile ago and just have this thing sitting in my garage not being used. $40 plus what ever shipping is to you. call me or email if your interested. thanks.

I might buy it just to have a backup. It would cost 10 times that to replace with new. Can you elaborate on the mod to make it 8-1? I get adding the extra block on the boom. How do you add a tie off at the traveler?

I switched to 2 triples and only hang off 1 boom tang. Makes it much easier to get under the boom at the rear of the boat. I always hated the three singles hanging there. Of course, I also hated the jib setup taking up tramp and deck space so I changed that too. My block system came off my Fox so its kinda overkill on the Tiger main but man is it easy to oversheet.

I'd worry that putting all the load on one boom tang would make it easy to break. I've got an 8-1 downhaul which is a big improvement over the original 3-1 (which broke) but I never really get close to maxing it out.

I'm just a day sailor. I like to go fast but I don't like tipping over or breaking things. After thinking about modding my main rig I can't think of any time that I couldn't have easily sheeted in harder and another sheave means more rope on the deck.

Worry not, I've been doing it for years

When I re-built my boom a couple a years ago I angled the last/aft becket forward so that it is in-line w/ the mainsheet stack ... I then took another becket and moved it ... I installed it angled the opposite direction, aft such that the two beckets touch w/ the front one (rear angled) supporting/bracing the rear (angled front) becket .... they make a "V" ...Ok?

The Mainsheet Pulley stack using "triple blocks" has one BIG advantange over the 3-becket system ... the mainsheet stack will easily rotate port/starboard so you can align it (and camcleat) to the location of whoever is "grinding/sheeting the main on the boat .... I also use a "Quick Release Spinnacker Shackle" on the top triple so I can easily hook or drop the mainsheet stack quickly .... when I leave the boat for even a few minutes sitting on the beach I "drop" the mainsheet stack and then boom... I had my boat "sail off" the beach one time when the sheet lines wrapped around my paddle lashed to the tramp when the sail and sheets were "flogging" ... off she sailed .... I was lucky a friend saw her sail off the beach and jumped on board as she passed his anchored H18mag where he was eating lunch ..... (it is not an enjoyable moment when you see your boat sail off w/ no-one on board!!!!)

I also have TWO different mainsheet stacks I use .... one is set up for w/o wings sailing/racing, low camcleat setting .... the other is for w/ magnum wings sailing/racing, higher camcleat setting.

Trust me ... when you stuff a bow and stand a H18mag on its nose when double trapped, if you have the camcleat at the low setting you CANNOT release the main!!!!! WAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaa ..... you go high and far .... I"ve been told over the dinner table later by a Mono-sailor; "was that your crew and you?" ... "You looked SPECTACULAR" .... "I've never seen anyone leave a boat like that!!!"

Next Trick: Replace those D_mn mast rotator and outhaul Jr Jamcleats w/ "Spinlocs"

ROPE ON THE DECK ??????

There is no such thing as "ROPE ON THE DECK" ..... (either more or less)

If it is on or attached to a BOAT .... it is a LINE !!!!

PENALTY ... PENALTY ..... the first round of drinks at the bar are on you, John!!!!

(I'll purchase the following round ....)

Under the heading of "for what its worth" I used "spinlocks" on my downhaul and hated them.

They would occasionally fail to click down (most likely usually due to operator error) and the next thing I knew, the boltrope on the main was riding high in the track. The thing about the spinlocks, it is not easy to tell "at a glance" if they are indeed "locked". I replaced them with the traditional harken cam cleats and have been much happier.

The lesson, for me, was that just because the technology is "new", it is not necessarily better.

Just one man's opinion, but I'd recommend you think twice before "upgrading"

Hi Stephen,

I think you miss understood me ....

On my DOWNHAUL I still use the Harken Exit Blocks w/camcleat (alum). They work just fine. The Harken Model # is 140 or 141, one is plastic cleat the other is aluminum cleat, you can also use the next smaller size model.

I installed the "Spinlocs" on the MAST ROTATOR and OUTHAUL as Megan (13 yrs old this year) was stuggling w/ releasing these when we would round "A"Mark ... I have stopper knots for a basic downwind tune ... Megan just taps them as we approach "A"Mark, the lines are released to their respective stoppers and around we go .... it's made a huge difference in our "changing gears" from upwind to downwind. Please note that I installed a "fairlead" in front of the mast rotator spinloc so the line feeds in a straight line into it. This is not required for the Outhaul.

I also had to "grind down" the heads of the SS machine screws that hold the spinlocs to those alum blocks w/ threaded inserts inside the boom.

For awhile I played w/ the notion of mounting Camcleats on the boom w/ custom plates ..... but I thought better of it when I pondered the thought of getting smacked "up-side" the head w/ those sticking out from the side of the boom .... getting hit w/ a flat boom you may survive w/ a headache .... getting hit w/ a pointie something- it could be lights out permenately!!!

I agree w/ you about spinlocs for the downhaul and I've heard some people have tried the mainsheet also ... they don't work there either. The Camcleats work just fine for those applications... but those JUNIOR CAMCLEATS are a royal pain in the _ss.

So try spinlocs in those two applications ... your crew should like them.

Would you like I could ship to you my "racing" boom so you could try them at Harrison???? I could do that. I have a basic spare boom I could use for a couple weeks ... after "Wildwood" next week my next regetta isn't until late Sept (27th&28th at Rock Hall YC, Md)

Harry,

Thanks for the kind and generous offer, but one thing I have learned over the years is changing things just before a big regatta is often unwise.

I feel it is better to make a change and sail with it for awhile to evaluate if it works or not, and get used to the new configuration.

Trying to get used to a change of equipment at the beginning of a big event is often worse than just slogging along with the old system.

Thanks again,
Stephen
