H18 trailer

Hi, first time on this forum. I recently purchased a nice 18 but am using a trailer from a previous 16. The rollers dont seem to support the hulls correctly and I dont like the way they look. What is everyone using for trailering their 18's. Roller, bunk, or the concave plastic that is in the Hobie catalog. Thnxs.

You need the cradles to spread out the load on the boat - at the very least on the front. Double rollers are OK on the back end.

Thanks , I plan on revamping my trailer this fall. Do you also store yours on the trailer?

I have cradles front and back on my trailer (I don't have an 18, but I have a 14, 16, 17 and Tiger) - and I store three of them on the trailer for the winter.

They're kept in the garage to avoid the snow. Snow weight (especially where you are) can be a boat-killer.

As others have said, snow can be a boat killer. In fact it got my H18 last winter. But thanks to this forum I was able to repair it and have had much fun sailing so far this (rainy cold) summer. I plan on storing it inside from now on, even though for me that means taking it apart and begging someone elst to let me take up space at their place.

I also store my H18 on the trailer and inside a garage. The snow load will damage your boat.

Plus, I have a new tramp, and no way I want it out in the elements all winter or it will be ruined.

I have to store mine outside on the trailer in the winter. What I've done is rig a taller stand for the rear of the mast. I took a 20' x 16' tarp and modified it so it covers the tramp like a tent, but wraps around the hulls fore and aft, like a cover. This way I have only a 7' section that needs care from a snow load.

As mentioned up top you want the cradles up front,only problem I had recently was they were backordered.If your rollers are in good shape,what i did was cut four 1/8" X10" X3" bars .punch 7/16" holes in the center offset towards the bottom and on each end in the center.I used the existing rear roller mounting bracket, putting the offset center hole as a pivot, then put the two rollers on each end with a sleeve so they dont bind up.I used allthread that was zinc coated for all three cross bolts.Having a pivoting double roller on the rear spreads the load on the hull and makes it real easy to load from beach or beach wheels.They sell the double setup but I made mine for about a third of the cost using most of my existing parts.The ones for sale are galvanized though,I sail fresh water mostly so i painted my setup.
