I think that every class in the association needs to have a 'Commodore/Class Chair', a person that organizes, informs and build excitement up and support for, their class, and can be a point of contact/liason to the HCA Board. This subject has been discussed for a while, but it is time to act.
Rob Jerry has taken the volunteer position for the Tiger fleet. That leaves the
14, 16, 17, 18, 20 and Wave.
I am really looking for a volunteers, that will work to get their classes organized and fired up. Good communication skills and internet access are a big plus. I would really like to hear some names tossed out there so we can get this in place and published before year end.
Lets do this.

In the interest of getting the ball rolling on this great idea, I am going to attempt to build an E-Mail List to be used in promoting all things Hobie 18.

This will be a great way to build attendance and enthusiasm for an outstanding class of boat. The possibilities for strengthening the class are truely exciting.

If you would like to have your name included on the E-Mail list of Hobie 18 owners/sailors please forward youtr contact information to me at
[email protected]

If you have any interest in being the Hobie 18 Class Chair, please let me know. The idea is to add a point of contact not add more to my plate. I am just excited about the possibilities and eager to get the ball rolling, and then pass it off to someone that can do the position justice.

As a fellow H18 sailor/racer, I agree on the importance of promotion and preservation within each respective fleet. The dropping participation is discouraging and realistically large growth is not on the horizon, especially the H18.

A little history on myself. I had never stepped foot on a sailboat of any kind until April 19th, 2005. That day was magical, exhilarating, almost sensual….. I fell in love. I didn’t even know what type of boat I was on, but I was infatuated.

My wife and got married at a Sandals Resort in Jamaica that trip. On the beach was Hobie Waves and Getaways that the resort provided for their guests I didn’t know anything about them, but I knew I wanted to. The guide on the beach took me for a ride, showed me the ropes and boom, off I went. Everyday for seven days straight I hogged a Wave most of the day. I’m sure I pissed off some guests for not taking turns.

Living in Oklahoma, there aren't as many beachcats setting around as you might find on the coasts. Therefore, my exposure to cats throughout my 36 years has been limited. So once back from my trip, I performed some quick research on what type to buy. I knew I wanted a Hobie. All I knew is what I sailed. I didn’t know there was anything else but HOBIE. Long story short, I found a 1982 H18 for sale about 100 miles away. Within one week of my return she was mine.

It is important to note that within the month of my return, I sold my 40 foot express yacht I kept on Lake Texoma for a broke down 1982 Hobie 18 with sails the that looked like the “gay and lesbianâ€

Another thing I forgot to mention, is the use of the US Sailing Regatta Network for NOR and Registration to the regattas. Sailing the 18 has brought a lot of lonely races. The last one I attended, I came in first place because I was the only one. :D  They said “do you want to start with the 16s or 17s?â€

Hey Clint,

Since Don B here in Dallas has his 18 back in tip-top shape, you need to work on him to pull the wings off when there are races.

It's a start.

I never thought of utilizing MySpace for that either........
I need an 18 guy soon, so you guys get to gettin' on this. Clint from OK will do just fine too. A newbie might be better than an seasoned guy.

GO CLINT !!!!!

and remember in a portsmouth handicap race you are competing "against the clock" ... keep your air clear .... don't play around w/ slowwer boats ... do what you do best (sail to your stengths), Ok?

Chris,
That Pre-registration program Clint mentioned is the same one I mentioned in my E-Mail to you .... he just listed another good reason for using Pre-Registration. RHYC's Mrs Connie Ranney has offered to spend some time to consult and help w/ advice, do we have anyone who could be the "lead" Computer/Site Master.

Sail Flat, Sail Fast, Sail Safe

I am willing to help out here in Illinois for the H18 cause (quite a few H18s in Chicago and Lake Carlyle).

I agree with Clint's posts

Don B, and any other Hobies out there.

The Wurstfest Regatta is in San Antonio November 8th & 9th. It is a handicapped regatta, but, (this is the important part) attending these regattas is good for Hobie One Design. Many Hobies sail at these regattas because they have never been introduced or don't no anyone else outside their "boat club". RECRUIT !!! Tell them how much better, fun, competitive OD is.

Join me at http://wurstfestregatta.com. I'll be driving 9 hours to share the love.

JUST ANNOUNCED! -- Wurstfest Regatta II will also be the Area F Qualifier for the 2009 Alter Cup (U.S. Multihull Championship)

Somebody needs to go and give Tomko some competition.

This is a link to a site I threw together to see if this is what we need. It works as a social network, allowing H18 owners submit information re. their cat.

See what you think.

If so we can reserve, hobie18.org.

Clint,

Your enthusiasm is truly inspiring.

The web site looks fantastic.

It would be great if you could go ahead and reserve the domain name.

Then if we can get the powers that be at Hobie to put a sticky at the top of the Hobie 18 Forum that includes the link to the domain, then everyone including any new 18 owners/sailors that may fist the forum will be able to find more information on what the class may be up to.

Chris Wessles will be impressed also, and hopefully we can develop the Hobie 18 Class into a more cohesive organization that can speak with a enthusiastic and unified voice to the HCA on issues that have a specific impact on our sailors and our class.

Thanks for the time and effort you have put into reinvigorating our class.

FYI, The E-Mail list is growing fast, I have over 100 names and E-Mail address's already.

Stephen

just an FYI. I am working on a site social site for Hobie sailors.
It is going to be built using the free code produced by the gang over at Lesseverything.com, called "loved by less". I have the builder of the code working on our site, very good friends with them. The site is going to be hobiefamily.com you can see other sites built using this code here http://lovdbyless.com/notes.html

Clint,

Great work! Really nice site. How come I can't join...I used to own an 18? and until I sail a H17 (shameless suck-up to MattB  ) it is, without a doubt, the best boat Hobie ever made!

cool vid of Ruff Riders too!

John
