I'm sure that this is an old and maybe familiar question, and so apologize in advance for not offering much in the way of excitement or a challenge. We got a used Hobie 18; I used to sail a Hobie 18 in 1976, but I don't remember it having a jib roller furling assembly. My question is this: The halyard runs down inside the job pocket, and beside the fact that the jam cleat at the bottom is a fairly inadequate means of securing the halyard (both dangerous and foolish to rely on), there is considerable line free after rasiing the jib; if you lash this around the forestay, the roller furling doesn't work. We've a friend who has raced 18's for over 20 years. I was dumbdfounded when I asked her how she dealt with this and she replied that she raises the jib, cuts the extra line and then re-attaches it in the fall! Somebody please tell me that the designers had more in mind when they designed this set up. It's very clevery dodged in the manual riggin photos and description.

The original H18 equipment included a short length of 1/8 line for jib luff tensioning. This tied to the tack shackle. You hoist the jib and before zipping closed the last few feet, hold the halyard, Pull the 1/8 line from the tack shackle up to the halyard wire thimble or block (if there - older models) and back down to the luff cleat. Untie the longer line and stow in the tramp pocket. Once the rig is tight, main up... sheet the main to fully tension the forestay. Adjust the jib luff tension with the short line and luff cleat (very little load on this is required to remove luff wrinkles). Half hitch the line around itself to lock into the cleat (keeps the luff tension from slipping) and zip the luff closed, tucking any excess line inside.

on my 18 I used a set of Sister Clips to deal with the extra line. Once raised then just un hook and tie off after the cleat. page 25 of the Hobie catalog.
