Sailing without a jib

I plan to head out in a 20 KPH wind on Sunday and am waiting for my mew jib to arrive in a week, because I am used to my hobie 16 with the jib playing such an important role in tack turning I am wondering if I will be able to function with my main only.

I tried it for a little while last weekend with my std H18 just to see how well it worked. It was tougher tacking, you really have to keep up your momentum. I did get in irons once but the other times it was OK. I only did it for a short time when we first went out and on the way back in so I do not have a lot of info.

Sailing the 18 without a jib is basically the same as sailing a Hobie 17, so yes it can be done.

I was out earlier this week, it was blowing strong at about 25knots and we had three people on board and didn't even pull out the jib since we were overpowered under main alone. Due to the extra crew and the steep chop, we basically had to K-turn through every tack. It's not a big deal, but it takes some practice to get the timing right.
