A friend of mine suggested one line for my jib sheets. Right now I have what I have, but when I upgrade is this a good idea. He has sailed h16's a bunch, but didn't know if this was a good idea for the h18. If I don't make sense the jib sheet would just be one line instead of 2, same lengh, I would guess, just connected.

Another thing, what quick pins are you all using that would help me set up quicker. It takes forever for my fingies to play aorund with those little o rings. There everywhere! ! ! lol

The jib sheet is one line on an 18, 44' of 5/16". Start by tying one end to the becket on one of the jib blocks on the boat. Run it up thru one of the jib clew blocks. Back down the same side thru the jib rachet block on the boat. Across the tramp, thru the jib rachet block on the opposite side. Up to a second block on the jib clew. Back down the same side and tie off on the jib block becket. You might want to use 50' or so if you have wings.

No quick pins on standing rigging!!! Not as strong and safe as solid pins and ring dings.

So my friend had the right idea. He had given me 2 lines he had, but mentioned that when I replace the line, I may want to make it one continuous line. . . Thanks.

As for the quick pins, got it. . . thanks.

Repeat... no quick pins on standing rigging.
In fact, get some rigging tape and wrap your "ring dings" so they don't accidentally come out...

So... quick pins? I use them:
- boom to mast connect
- tiller to rudder cross bar
- main sail clew to boom

AND... I have a shackle or two with a "captive" pin... that turns and snaps into place under tension... the hole in the shackle and the end of the pin are keyed.. so the pin only goes into the shackle one way... put the pin in, turn it, it gets under tension and snaps into a recess. Not sure what you call it... common on the jib clew.

Best thing for quick rigging is:
- organization (don't be digging around for something)
- next is a sequence of rigging events (get out of sequence, and you have to undo.. do what you forgot, then redo...)
- next is a checklist to ensure you don't forgetchecklist (until you learn your routine and get it memorized)
- next is a helper who knows their role

After that... you'll find you're so efficient... when someone new helps you they just mess up your system and before you know it... something's not right.

Interesting. I was wondering what others used to connect the clew to the outhaul. Below is an example of what my boat came with and I've never been comfortable with it due to the loads brought on by the mainsheet system and the fact that it seems like the pin could possibly fall out in the middle of a sail (even though it never has). Other suggestions?

Rob, The other thing is you mentioned using a pin for the "boom to mast connect". I don't use any pins to connect my boom to the mast. The gooseneck slides into the hole in the boom cap and everything gets held in place by the mast rotator line, which runs through the rotator arm and back through the "rotator adjuster" cleat on the top of the boom. Am I missing something?

the gooseneck itself is pinned to the mast.

Brian, I see what you mean about loads on the main clew/boom connection.. and I use a different style pin... but the push-pins are somewhat hollow, maybe I should use a solid pin there.. ?

Otherwise, for the boom to mast, yes, I use a push-pin to connect the boom gooseneck to the fitting on the mast.... seems like yours is always connected and you just slide your boom onto the gooseneck (this is non-standard)....

Hi,

Great advise on the "Quick Pins" .. and the tape ...

I use Quick pins in the same exact places except my boom traveler/mainsail clew 1/4" dia hole enlarged over time and the quick pin will no longer secure them together so I'm back to using a "clevis pin w/ ring" and two SS 1/4 " washers (one for either side). I also use a 3/16dia Quick Pin to connect the Jib to the jib halyard shackle, (after I dropped the dang little threaded pin on a sandy beach) I had to drill the threads out but that was 20yrs ago ....

Try one of the aftermarket Boom/Gooseneck/Mast Connectors made out of machined aircraft aluminum ... nice .... removes all the slop .... The SS gooseneck is suppose to stay w/ the boom, so that means the little "C" ring/"Jesus" clip inside has broken and come off allowing the goose neck to slide out. To fix mine I drilled a little hole vertically through the gooseneck and installed a small SS machine screw w/ nuts (if you try horzontially there is not enough room inside the boom for the nuts)

Jib Sheet: The less wieght hanging on the jib ... the better the light air response. I recommend Yale's "Conception Line" 1/4dia ... it a Marfolli clone ... very light ... does not absorb water ... runs slightly large .... soft ... very soft actually .... easy on the hands. Add a pigtail of 1/8"dia spectra/vectra to help reduce wieght even further and helps pull the jib through when tacking. Use a 30" Lg piece tieing it at the middle to the jib ... now you have two pigtails ... tie the jib sheet blocks on w/ a bowline knot.

For a mainsheet I use the Yale Conception 5/16Dia on my H18 and P19MX .... and again Yale Conception 1/4"dia on my niece's Laser (which we share for Junior Racing/Frostbiting) ... the other Laser sailors are amazed that her/our mainsheet doesn't drag in the water when sailing downwind ....
