Line Size for Jib sheet and Main Halyard line

I need to replace the main halyard line on my 18 and the line guide calls for 3/16" x 58'. I also want to replace the jibsheet line and that calls for 5/16" x 44'. To save some money I want to purchase a 100' role of the 5/16" and also use the 5/16" for the main halyard if possible.

Will the 5/16" line fit in the mast track and the pulleys and still be easy to hoist the main?

Paul; 5/16 diameter will not fit in the mast track. I use 3/8 for the mainsheet, 5/16 for the jib sheet and 3/16 for the main haylard. If you use a higher quality line you can drop a diameter, but it will be harder to hang on to. (grip) If you color code your lines it is easier to figure out which one to grab when they are laying all over the tramp.

A good line will last many years so the cost over the years for the better stuff is minimal.

i have to agree with the above.... a good halyard will last YEARS... if you tear the boat down and hide lines from the weather. i purchased exactly what my hobie dealer told me to and the lines have lasted forever, (12 years now?) buy the right stuff and enjoy...boat parts are not the place to save money, cheep beer is.....

A shamless plug for Robbline.... I upgraded main & jib sheets to Robbline, light, easy on the hands, it floats, works great...a special trick (which I don't know) to whipping the ends - ?liquid epoxy?

Wish I had different colours for main & jib.....
