Fully rigged and in a hoist?

We live on a lake. I'm considering getting an h18. We currently have our other boats in hoists off the dock.

How "rigged" can you leave an 18? Is it possible to fully rig with everything but the main and leave it in the hoist that way?

I don't see why not. As long as the boat is well supported in the slings and in a protected area where the waves won't bounce it around, and there's room above for the mast and forestay/the slings themselves don't preclude the boat from being lifted in the hoist. Functionally, it would be no different than leaving the boat on the beach fully rigged, which a lot of people do. It may be wise to get a snorkel cover on the jib, as it will be difficult to remove with the boat in the air/water.

I keep my H18 on a converted pontoon hoist I purchased used on my area. It was pretty cheap. I added two 4x4 support beams and purchased and mounted hull cradles to support the boat so it's not sitting directly on the support beams. Using a jib snorkel to protect the jib is a good idea. I have two straps that hold the boat in the cradles, one on each hull.

In my early days I had the boat/hoist blow over in storms so I added two augers positioned at the front support beam (when the hoist is raised) on either side of the hoist. I attach a line from the top of the auger to the end of the support beam on both sides. It hasn't blown over since then.

Depending on the wind direction I can rig the main while it's on the hoist. The concept has worked great for me. By raising and lowering the hoist I can easily get the boat high enough to get it out of the waves.

I built a simple rack for my 18, just four post then used treated 2x6 for cross bars and carpeted them then made one section of dock to run between the hulls, I did add some width to the rack where the hulls sit to spread out the load. I can slide the hobie on and off by myself, also its easy to tie it down to hold it steady in storms. I keep every thing on the boat except the sails, not that hard to put the jib on and furl it while standing on the section of dock . 9 times out of 10 I can even raise the main and then slide the boat in the water. Once in a great while if we have an east wind I have to turn the boat around to get the main up, Im on the east side of the lake so keep the bows pointing out and into the prevaling west winds....Jay
