fixin to put a rectangular hatch in my 2018 compass and move round one to front. I know it's personal preference, but, are there any benefits one way or another vertical or horizontal?

I think you run less risk of having issues (cracking or otherwise) with cutting too close to where the mold starts for the Mirage Drive if you install it perpendicular to the length of the kayak. At least you know this way works since Hobie has a video on it.
