hi everybody. i was bitten by the sailing bug about 27 years ago when my father had a Mac Greagor 21 and our neighbors had a 21' rynolds cat, i bet you can tell the one i liked the most. unfortunatly the last time i went sailing was about 20 years ago so that itch has been growing for some time now and the only cure is to go sailing. i have decided to go hobie and im positive the 16 is for me. i have read "Catameran Sailing From Start to Finish" by Phil Berman so many times,i know what to look for in a used cat but reading posts on this forum has made me think that i want to go as new as posible if not brand spankin new, so my question is dose anybody know what the price is for a new hobie 16. i hope to purchase a 16 sometime this year i think it would be killer if i where the first owner

You'll have to call a Hobie dealer for the latest price. Ballpark, without trailer, is $9,500+

i havent been scared off yet, although that price is a little higher than i thoughit would be. the last time i talked to a dealer i though i asked for the price of the boat but they added every thing i would need and then some, so i though i would ask here first because you guys aren't out to get my money, at least i hope your not out to get my money :) i honestly felt like i was at a car dealership. times have changed and they have moved to,or built a newer and larger location since then. i had planed on going to my local dealer to see if they might know of any good used cat that aren't listed here. i realy would like to get on the water this year.

You should consider a Getaway or even a Wave if the H16 new price is an objection. The Getaway (also 16') is more durable, has a much higher capacity, forward trampoline, seat backrest as an option... pretty fun boat. MSRP $6,899 (USA / USD) plus freight and any setup costs. About $3,000 less than the 16.

i had though about the getaway but i think it will fall short in the performance department for me. when making my dicision i looked at many boats including monos. i wanted a boat with performance and i kept coming back to the 16. rite now all im interested in is day sailing but i also have a copmetitive nature so racing isn't out of the question. a new boat ma be out of my reach now but i know that there are used boats out ther in my price range and if i absolutly need too i can wait another year.

Jester,

Used Hobies are more available in some areas more than others. I saw a lot of them on the beach in Florida in all stages of condition, some probably abandoned. Here in NC there are a few, more at the coast. I bought my boat new in '85 and never regretted buying new. The price then was less than half what it is now.

As to what you need, a trailer, the boat, possibly a righting line, life jackets, and a throwable cushion. Beyond that I don't know what else. Other needed accessories like a wetsuit will become apparent to you later. If you sail on a beach you might want cat tracks to be able to move the boat across the beach to launch.

Buy the newest boat you can afford because you want to sail, not spend your time working on repairs. I have sailed the H-16 for many years and am fully satisfied. You won't be disappointed.

jester, don't be afraid of the dealers. Yes, they are in business to make money but if they really wanted to make loads of money they wouldn't be selling small boats if they didn't love what they do, and a good one will provide advice, service, and support well beyond just the price of a boat. Dealers also sell used boats on consignment, and while you may initially sneeze at the idea of a 'used boat lot', the dealer will know exactly what needs to be done to a boat to bring it up to speed (if necessary), provide the needed parts on site if he has them or quickly get them from the factory, and will have a selection of boats to see. A dealer can also be a second set of eyes for you when a boat comes on the market if they know you're looking. So add a dealer to your quiver of resources.

Also, and I could be wrong, but I imagine many new 16s these days are sold to racers who want to stay competitive, while they sell their old boat to up-and-coming racers they know and who would keep the boat in the local racing fleet. A new 16 is probably the least expensive fiberglass performance boat on the market today, and if you shop around you'll likely find other brands start around $15,000 or more, which makes the 16 that much more of a bargain. And if you're interested in racing then the 16 has the largest racing class of cats today.

You're barking up the right tree, but don't make it the only tree you bark up.

Try and hook up with some of the sailors in your area and at least you can get on the water.

Jester,
Where are you from. I live in West Point Utah and sail in Pineview, Willard and the Great Salt Lake. There are a bunch of Hobie sailors around here and a couple of organizations that will help you get started. Too bad about the furnace, but you could probably still swing a used H16. I bought my '83 that is in excellent shape for around $1000. All I had to do was a little maintenance and cleaning. I have since added some new gear and accessories, but was sailing right away. Don't be in a hurry and something will come up. It's a good idea to check in with Sidsports 'cause they do have boats once in a while. They are usually high though. If you need some help, answer in here and I will get you my phone number and email address. I love teaching sailing and have been doing this for a long time. Always willing to help out a fellow sailor.
