 Post subject: question on jib settings

new to hobie cat sailing but old to sailing smaller boats. ok here is the question after checkng the vin number it turns out i got a 1980 hobie cat 16 and i am familure with all the rigging but one. the jib line cleats are on a "thingie" that can be moved closer or further from the mast (left/ right) here is the dumb question what does the different positions aftualy do? i have messed with the 2 ferthest points (in and out) and not realy noticed much difference. any clue my eyes have glazed over form surching the web.

Closer to the mast and left alone for many people, but if you want to actually use it...

Closest to the mast for upwind.

A little further out in high winds.

All the way out for down wind sailing.
