Tune like the books say, Especially for that days conditions (just like cars are tuned track specific sailboats are tunned relative to the conditions ON THE WATER!) Tighten your nuts and bolts, put washers and shims where needed. Get those rudders true and silent! (you'd be amazed what a little sanding will do for an old pair ow stock white rudders!!!!) SAVE WEIGHT!!! Not with carbon fiber, special hulls, lighter blocks, less line, etc just lose some weight!!! I'm a cyclist in my spare time and the best place to save weight is the rider!!! same holds true in all racing sports. You'll save more weight skipping that McDonalds 1/3 pounder and taking a Schit Before the race than $600 worth of carbon fiber will get you!!!! FACT! Want a faster horse get a smaller jockey! I'm 6'2" 200lbs. I pared down to 180 last season and trust me it makes a huge difference!
It started when I was out on my 16 solo and my kid sister was sailing against me, She beat me like a red-headed step child! I know I was in the groove all day and my boat was tuned better (45min tuning + EPO's and new sails VS. her old whipped up worn out boat) But it turns out no matter how deep in the groove I got, her 120lbs vs. my then 215 was no match. we'd come out of a tack and I'd just watch that boat jump up and sail off like I was towing a skier. Maybe on a howling heavy day I could have beat her but she killed me that day and I'll never live it down. Lose the weight. you'll go faster and probably feel better as an added+
Figure out the sails and tune the rudders, from there on out it's all about finding that blue groove and staying it.
