I recently purchased a 1978 Hobie 16 with a comp tip mast, and I've never owned one. Is it really neceassary to have a comp tip cover? I leave my mast up all year at my cabin so will not covering it ruin it?

I use a UV protectant on mine (http://www.303products.com/)
A thorough cleaning and application of something (like wax), at the beginning of the season,
to cut down the UV degradation is necessary or yes, over time, fibers will start showing through.
Wont say it'll be "ruined" if you don't cover, you can always sand and recoat the surface with epoxy,
but a little preventative maintenance will go a long way.
I'd re-apply again during the season, about once every 2 to 3 months.

Side note...if anyone figures out how to hoist a comp-tip cover up the mast ??? please share :)
