Crew weight

I totally get why keeping combined skipper and crew weight to a minimum is desirable for racing, but is there a point of diminishing returns as it relates to increases in wind speed? In other words, in 8 knots, the lighter crew/skipper weight is clearly an advantage. Is that also true in 15-20 knots or does it pay to have more weight as the wind picks up to keep the boat down on the water?

Seems to me that lighter is better no matter what. Would a heavy jockey give a horse more traction? Probably...but would it win the race? I doubt it. I'm guessing a lighter crew in heavy wind or seas would just give you a more lively ride.

More weight is better in heavy wind because it keeps the hull down. If you didnt have the extra weight the hull would rise to far and you would sheet out the main to keep it down. Sheeting out means your wasting wind and slowing down. A heavier crew in heavy wind is better. Light crews are better in light to moderate wind. Also when I say better I mean faster.
