Recently purchased a used Hobie Cat. The guy we bought it from tossed in a Baby Bob that he said he had never mounted. We think he never mounted it because the mount does not seem to be made for a 16' boat? It is basically two small plates that just barely fit over the top of our mast. Is there a different mount for this or is there a trick that we are missing?

Thanks
Mark-

They advertise to work on the 16.
I think you will need to drill and tap the mast head to screw it on, or you could sell it ;)

Moab, I removed the medium size Bob from my H16. It also has the two mounting plates that mount over the mast-pulley-cap. Well, the side to side motion on the Bob, cracked the pulley cap in all four corners, and it was about to fall appart. I replaced the pulley-cap with a new one, and custom built a pivoting mount for the Bob that mounts to the side of the mast and not the tip. Now because it`s pivoting, it can also point to the wind and eliminate wind drag ( like it`s supposed to, see the newer Cats ). I know that the two plates is a simple design, and it works, but if you plan to ride your H16 a lot, I recommend you look for an alternate mount, or plan to replace the mast tip every once in a while. The mast tip cost me $120.00, which is not a lot if I don`t have to replace it often, but I also wanted a rotating Bob so ended up buiding the Bob mount myself. I could send you a photo via e-mail because I have not been able to attach pictures here.

And by the way, the Bob really works, it will definitelly make your life much easier if your mast hits the water, I mean, MUCH EASIER !!!!

Hobie 14 and Hobie 16 without Comp Tip Mast Head. Tools required are a number 20 drill, a 10-32 tap and a drill motor. Place the Mast Float and Bracket over the mast head casting such that the centerline of the float is perpendicular to the center line of the mast. Make a mark on the casting at each of the 4 holes in the bracket. Remove the bracket and drill and tap the 4 holes. Caution: Avoid drilling into the sheave if possible. Using the 4 each 10-32 by 5/16" screws and lock washers secure the Mast Float to the mast head. The Hobie 16 mast head casting is narrower then the Hobie 14 and it will therefore require that the ears on the bracket be bent in.

I just posted a Youtube video showing how to install a Hobie Bob to an all aluminum Hobie mast. It's not too hard to do. You just need the tools.
Hope this helps.
