Hi people. I hope I am posting this in the correct section?

This morning I was asked if I could help a relative sell his 1980 hobie 16. He is moving and decided to sell the cat rather than take it with him.

It is located in Fairfield NJ.

I have not seen the hobie myself. From my talks with the owner I have learned...

The boat and trailer have not been used for 10 years. He has put newer tires on the trailer because the originals were dry rotted. He figures that although it is rusty, it's sound and ready to roll. My honest opinion is the bearings will need to be regreased or new bearings installed.

At some point in the past a carpenter working on the homes roof dropped a tool on the Hobie and it made 2 small holes in one of the decks.
I had him check for delamination and soft spots on the decks surface and he said they were both hard with no delamination.

The sails, boom, trampoline and other items have all been stored inside and are reported to be in solid, useable condition. The boat & trailer have been outside.

These are older folks who don't own a digital camera or computer. I have asked them to find a friend or neighbor who can take and email me some digital pics of the Hobie. When I get them, i will post.

He mentioned that he'd like to sell it for $500. My expertise is in selling items on ebay... which is where this Hobie will end up when I have some pics to put in the auction and if someone here doesn't buy it first.

If someone from this forum would like to buy it for $500, that would save me from putting it on eBay and be a pretty good deal for the buyer. I see the hobie 16 regularly selling for over $1000 on ebay. Heck, you could buy it and flip it maybe? :?: :!:

Pics to come soon or if you're near Fairfield NJ and want to see it ASAP, let me know. I will put you in touch with the seller.

thanks!

Pics...

Please let me know if the asking price is fair. I will be putting this cat on eBay Monday.

If anyone here is interested... shoot me an email or message.

thanks

If it's complete, useable, and no major damage (i.e., soft spots, cracks, dents, rips, corrosion). Then yes, probably a reasonable price. However, from the pictures, the boat and trailer look pretty rough. It may simply be a matter of the boat needing a good scrubbing and a coat of wax, in which case it could actually be a good deal for someone. Or the boat could have soft hulls, corroded metal parts, and mice infested sails, in which case the buyer is just hauling away someone else's junk. Hard to tell from the pictures and without seeing the boat/equipment in person.

If the seller is looking to move the boat quickly, they may have better luck if they spend a few hours cleaning it up and taking some better pics including pictures of the sails. Also keep in mind that this is really not the time of year when many people are looking to buy a boat.

If the sails are in good shape and the boat is complete, I think $500 is very fair. And if you want to drive it to Minnesota I would buy it right now! haha
