Long shot

Hi everyone. It's a long shot but I'm really enjoying my vacation in the finger lakes region of NY. That is, until today when we were just heading out to play in about 20 kt winds and broke a rudder. Anyone in the mid upstate NY region want to sell a used rudder for a Hobie 16? I'm kicking myself as I think of the one that I have sitting in my basement 500 miles away.
Just thought I'd give it a shot. Thanks for any leads or offers!

How close are you to Syracuse? Hit up Rob Jerry @ Boatworks (the dealer in SYR). He'll have both new and used parts.

Thanks for the lead! I'll keep it in mind for next time. I'm just about to head out to try the gorilla glue and stainless steel screw repair job to the upper bolt hole section of the rudder. This is my second failure at exactly the same point on these old rudders. This is the first time I've tried to repair it though. We'll see. I only have one more day before I head home. Wish me luck and thanks again for the help.

I broke two rudders (at different times) in exactly the same place. My '82 had adjustable rudder arms that I believe came from a newer boat. The rudders were drilled for non adjustable arms though which are slightly different. Apparently different enough to keep breaking off the tops while locking them down. That was my theory anyway. No problems since I drilled them using the correct template.

I was just getting ready to launch and was seating the tiller arm when this one broke. The last time I was working on the right rudder while the boat was on the trailer and the left one just let go at the same point. The one that broke this time is a replacement that I picked up. The repair worked great and I enjoyed some great sailing in about 15kt winds with no problem. I'm thinking of preemptively putting in a couple of 3" SS screws in the "good" rudder now. Recessing some washers around those holes also came to mind. Maybe I'll give that a try some time over the winter if I'm not fixing something else on this project.

I just got back from a week of sailing on Seneca and did not see your post, never thought to look. I had two spares with me. What lake were you on?
Girlfriend and I had a great time, thanks to Stephen Nagle, from the forum, for sending us to Smith Park to camp and launch from. Made it down to the Glen and then up to Lodi point. My Sony cam shows 57 miles over two days but we sailed a lot after the batteries ran out.
