Hobie 16 trapeze

When I bought my 16 the seller gave me two new sets of coated trapeze wires also. When I put them on they are to long, Im guessing for a boat other than the 16. Is there any way I can shorten them? Anyone know how long they should be? They are nice new wires and I hate to not get some use out of them.

If you have a marine supply store or a place that builds wire and rope cable they would have the right equipment to cut the wire to the right length and re-end the cable. sorry I do not no what the correct length is for the 16 trapeze wires are?

Lowes has a swaging tool for about $12.00 that works very well. Be sure and save the stainless eye piece to use again. The difficult part will be cutting the cable neatly without fraying the end. I have taped the area where you need to cut and then used a sharp hack saw to cut them. Works great. As far as the length, you can determine that yourself by installing them and subtracting the length you need for you adjustable fittings and dogbone or whatever system you use. I don't know if this is a class measurement requirement or not.

The wire guide shows for the Hobie 16 trap wire lengths of 16'-9 1/8" for older boats, 16'-7 1/4" for newer boats.

The problem is that if they are in fact too long and they are double wires (one thimble up top to connect to the mast tang with two wires coming down), then it's not going to be easy to shorten them because you can't adjust the top end and if you shorten from the bottom end, the stop for the handle is going to be in the wrong spot. I guess you could carefully cut off the stop for the handle, but you take a big risk damaging the wire in doing so.

You may be better off figuring out what boat these wires are for and selling them and just buying the correct Hobie 16 wires.
