I would check out the rear of that port hull (photo 11). Looks like a repair has been made, but not well and may need work in the future.

Would buy another if Hobie would build it.

So, take this with a grain of salt since I am a newbie sailor, but I did do a lot of looking around for boats last year and $2100 for an '83 seems kind of steep to me (especially if there's potential repairs needed). I suppose it could depend on where you are in the country, maybe boats are more plentiful in my neck of the woods (NC), but I got an 89 for less than $2100. Condition of sails probably matters too, right? If they're the original sails, they might be pretty blown out by now. Plus all the hidden costs you may encounter if the stock parts haven't been/need to be replaced/are missing - shrouds, pins, halyards (I discovered my boat needed new shrouds - the old ones had some nasty kinks in them and wouldn't be safe in high winds).

Just my two cents - I might see if you can get a discount or find a comparable boat for less.

There are some red flags, looks like there is a lot of pitting on the rudder castings and corner castings, and that does look like a patch and the back part of the hull. Also not knowing the condition of sails or mast, those are certainly pricey items to replace. I am also pretty new to these boats but I am always watching the local ads for boats, and I see them in better condition for less money quite often.

Thanks guys I really appreciate the help it saved me a lot of time and loss of money . I saw the patch but wasn't sure , just kinda overlooked it; and I also thought to myself the price was high for a 32 year old boat of this condition. I just saw a 2005 for 4200 but unfortunately it is in ND and I am in Beaufort SC so anyway on with the search.

Sometimes you got to drive to pick up the boat you are looking for. Over the winter I restored a 1975 H16 for my sons college grad present...new gelcoat all over, new tramp, sail was all ready a newer replacement bit touched up any loose stitches, replaced a couple battens, stripped and repainted the trailer, etc....you get the idea but he got engaged this spring and moved into her home and no place to store the boat. Put it on craigslist and someone from Bozman Mt drove to minneapolis to pick it up. Obviously you have to add travel into your cost whci my buyer did but he couldn't find a good cat in his area that had been gone conpletely thru and he wouldn't have any issues or missing parts.

You'll find something, I'm certain. Being in SC, driving to NC, GA, AL, TN, FL wouldn't be too bad if you saw something that looked like a real possibility. Don't know if there's a "season" when people are most likely to put a boat up for sale, but I bet if you keep scouring classified, craigslist, etc., you'll find something with fewer question marks.
