Howdy y'all,

Dose anybody use a compass on their 16?

I Was thinking about making a base plate that pined into the mast step link after the mast was up. This would keep the compass centerline on the boat without interfering with mast rotation.

Any advice or 2 cents?

Thanks,

Nathan

I mounted one on a stainless base piece I fabricated. It sit one the forward crossbar so it's very visible. :)

I have a compass on both my 16 and 21SE....just in case. :D

Hey Nathan,
Been using a compass ever since I've been sailing.

Image

It's a large kayak compass large enough to be seen from every point on the boat, even trapped out on the stern. Many of the H16 sailors use to laugh at me for having one but they obviously didn't understand it's principles. Always sailing in the ocean (with few land references), I found it to be very useful.

I used a plastic base permanently attached to the (right) front cross bar but moved it to the left side after installing the spinnaker as some of the spi hardware needed to be located on the right. The compass attaches to the permanent base only requiring a twist for a quick mount. Ocean or lake, properly used, will be a plus !!!

Thanks!

i sail mostly in the gulf and would defiantly appreciate the a compass.

i may be over thinking it, but wont being mounted to one side or the other of the mast effect your reading on opposite tacks?
i suppose it really wouldn't matter the compass would just be a reference. unless you were sailing great distances.

i think im leaning more to a more permanent mount like yours on the crossbar instead of pinning it to the mast step link.

thanks,
nathan

Nathan,
If you sail very far out in the gulf, you would definitely appreciate a compass. Very far offshore, all of the coastline looks the same. These nautical compasses are not like some other compasses. Instead of the magnetic pin (arrow) rotating to north, the magnetic indicator is a ball with the numeric images ( 0 to 360 degrees) marked on it. The side of the crossbar that it is mounted on matters not as long as you can see it. The indicator on top can be adjusted accordingly.
