I would fix the spot with injection also. 1st time out, who is to say what more will happen with it in a season. You may as well get a quart of Git-rot. You don't say how big a small section is. Fresh gelcoat can be expensive, it probably would cost more than the value of the boat to have someone do it for you. I have done my own, just the hulls and skipping the decks, It's easy to spend 300+ in supplies. There's alot of surface area to prep on the 16. My brother has an 18 he was thinking of having me do. But with the amount of work it needed it wasn't worth the grand it would cost him. I figured about 40 + hours of labor on that one, to refinish it. His 18 has more surface to repair, cover, wet sand and polish. And that would be just the hulls, skipping the decks. I do plan on doing his 3.5 (11') labor free this year, as it is a trainer for his grandchildren.
