New Tow Vehicle

Last weekend I drove back down to Florida to pick up this gift from my Dad. It’s a 2000 Lexus RX300, V6 and has a towing package. I have been towing with my 2006 Nissan Quest and I like the Quest for all the room when the seats are all down, I can store the beach wheels in the van when out on the water, but I am going to give this one a try and see how it does.

I used to tow my 16, as well as my flatbed car carrier with a 2200 pound car on it with my old Highlander, which is the same chassis, it'll tow nicely, and you won't know the Hobie is back there

Wouldn't do it this way without cradles on the trax (which are highly desirable). I also remove the rudder assembly when trailering.

Have done it this way successfully for many years/miles now.

That’s a neat set up for the cat trax, mine ride nicely between the hulls and my storage tube with no problems and it gets them down low and protected. When out on the water I would take the trax, and anything else that could walk away, and lock them up in the van, lots of room with all the seats down. I will look at locking the trax down onto the trailer with cable locks when I tow with the Lexus because I don’t think the trax will fit inside the vehicle and I don’t want to leave them on the trailer without some kind of locking system when I am out on the water.

I've been towing my H16 around with a Toyota Camry. The boat doesn't weight much, and doesn't have a lot of drag. I try to keep it under 60mph, and less than 1 hour trips.

Back in '85 when I purchased a new Hobie 16....my tow vehicle was an '81 VW rabbit with the 1.8 liter?

I stored this new boat at my buddy Dave's house by Lake Monroe just outside of Bloomington,Indiana

His house was at the bottom of a steep gravel drive. My front wheel drive rabbit didn't like all of that tongue weight and would spin out,so....

I would strap large pieces of firewood on top of my front bumped for traction and pull my rig right up his hill......ramming speed.

I had a friend who towed a 16 behind a VW Rabbit diesel back in the 80's! No issues these things don't weight anything. I use a VW Passat TDI, no issues other than trying to keep the speed down.
