Alright guys I'm pluging in for you knowlege here. I have two masts and I trying to decide which one I should keep and which one I should sell. I have one old style and one that has been converted to the comptip. Both seem to be in good condition. I'm thinking of doing some racing, not much, and they will allow me to race here with the old style.

Which will hold up better over time?

What are the biggest advantages of having the comptip?

What are the disadvantages of a comptip?

What is a fair price for selling a mast in good condition comp vs old?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I know this won't help much and I really have no idea either way however I have been reading about the Pan-Am games and some teams are using comp tip and other teams are using Aluminum. From the looks of it, its a matter of preferance.

Racing - If you ever decide to race Hobie one-design you will be required to have a comptip.

Which will hold up better over time? - Comp tips will degrade quicker over time than aluminum.

What are the biggest advantages of having the comptip? - The biggest advantage other than the psa about overhead wires is that it is easier to de-power the main with a comptip due to its flexibility.

What are the disadvantages of a comptip? - More likely to break due to it's composite construction and attachment via epoxy and fasteners. Less rigid and therefore doesn't hold sail shape as well in lighter winds.

What is a fair price for selling a mast in good condition comp vs old? - the going price for a new comptip is listed locally @ $490. If you're selling the comptip mast in good but used condition, it would sell here for around $300-$350. Non-comptip would probably sell for $150-$200.
