Your regional Hobie supplier may have on hand or they can order from Hobie (HC 20611100, $490usd). Our regional supplier, Mariner Sails, will ship at very reasonable rates.

I have two brand new comp tips sitting in the rafters of my tool shed. I acquired them back when Hobie was supplying them for free as a retrofit on existing all-aluminum masts. I had two H-16's at the time, hence two comp-tips. I have always adhered to the saying "if it's free, it's for me".

I never cut back my mast. I never felt the need.

I no longer know where the other bits and pieces are, but I might be able to turn up some of it.

To my recolection there used to be some instructions, an aluminum plate, a piece of foam, a new main halyard, monel rivets & rivet caps.

Long ago I sold the halyards and used up the rivets, but I might be able to locate the rest.

If not, the comp-tip alone should be a good catch for you. You could resource out the rest.

Interested? if yes, I'll check out the going price, discount heavily it to make it worth your while, and figure out the cost of shipping. I live in New Hampshire. Let me know where you want it to go.

you do not want the original comptips. You want the new style ones that are riveted on with mast tang! call your local dealer, if you don't have a local dealer order one from one of us that do mail order, which I think every dealer does!

My apologies. I've been distanced from my prior fanatical level of sailing for several years & I'm not up on the changes that may have occured.

So, are these two comp tips now to be considered junk, or is there some worth to some one? Throwing them out won't make me feel bad since they were free to begin with.

No I would not throw them out, there are still boats out there with them. there just not as good as the current style, and they may be able to be modified to be used are a current style comptip. I've just had someone people come in the store disappointed because they were unaware there was a change in the comptips and they bought a new/old one. Yours may be the new style what year did you get them?

The initial retrofit kit did not require removal of the mast tang. Two screws held the Comptip in place. Unfortunately, this didn't work well, so the design was quickly changed.

These Comptips are several inches shorter than the newer Comptips that Brad is referring to.

If you had rivets that came with the Comptip kit, then you probably have the newer version, but the only way to know for sure is to measure the Comptip.

Nice subject line, eh?

I got them ages ago, back during the first year or two of the retrofit program. I don't remember exactly. 1990ish???

I'll measure them when I get home from work tonight.

I think it's time I got rid of them, so pending measurements, if you're interested let me know.

Now a digressive story...

The reason I had two boats at the time was that I needed a new mast. My crew at one regatta was large, 6'2" 200 or so pounds, and overzealous at sheeting in the jib faster than I could the main. This lead to mast counter-rotation in heavier air. I always had to tell him to ease the jib and the mast would then clunk over.

This particular regatta was very heavy air. We did well (first in B-fleet). But one one tack we both got trapped out and I wondered why on earth the boat was pointing so poorly.

Yup. The mast was rotated wrongly and flexing in a very bad way.

I screamed. We both swung in and corrected the problem.

But that mast always had a bow in it after that. I tried taking it off the boat and lashing it firmly down. I placed a soft fulcrum under it and sat on the tip until it looked straight. It straightened, but had a memory. It was horrible in light air. I had to keep a foot on the boom to keep it rotated correctly on one tack.

Am I stealing this thread? Oh well.

I bought an old hobie from a departing member for $500. I kept the mast and sold off much of the rest, more than making my money back. I even sold my old mast for $100 (I was up-front about the bend).

Anyway, if one of you are interested in the comp tips, let me know. I'll post an ad at some point in the future.

Is this a newer style H16 Co,p Tip???:

I did a quick measurement of my two comp tips. I may be off up to 1/4" on the over-all length...I was pressed for time and they were in high in the shed. The insertion length is accurate.

Overall length = 101-3/4" (includes sheave bracket at top)

Insertion length = 6"

Effective length = 95-3/4" (O.A. Length - Insertion Length)

Other dimension that might help:

Over all length of comp tip without top sheave bracket = 99"

I don't remember anything about screws with these comp tips. I think the attachment was via some or all of the rivets on the mast tang.

I am pretty sure I still have the instructions stuck in a box over at my parent's house in the attic. I'll check by this weekend.

Jon

Russiet- -Do you still have those comp tips. I just bought a 1984 H16 for my 15 yr. old son, and the comp. tip looks like its getting bad. I might be interested in one if they are the full length ones.

Yes. Both are still up in my shed.

Today I'll look for the instructions and anything else that came with them. There is a very good chance I know exactly where this stuff is. I know for sure that you'll need rivets & rivet caps.

I can take pictures & email them to you if you want. You should look at the measurements I posted & call a Hobie dealer and ask if they are the longer ones. My hunch is that they are.

I know....I just took my mast down for the season. I'll hold one of the tips up next to it. I should be able to tell. The instructions probably will also indicate what style it is....I am confident I can put my hands on them. I'll let you know later today or tomorrow.

If you want to contact me, use russietATwildblueDOTnet

OK, I got them both down & washed them. They are not the bolt-on type.

I also found instructions along with foam plug (1), aluminum plate (1) and labels. Missing are rivets (12), rivet caps (12), main halyard (1), and a roll of 3m vinyl tape.

One is slightly more cosmetically pleasing than the other, but they might as well be twins.

Russiet,
Shoot me a message and let me know what you want for one of those comptips... I live in Portland, ME so pickup wouldn't be too much of an issue.
Thanks,
JRG
