If they conduct electricity, then yes.

Kevlar (Aramid fibers) is not conductive, however, carbon is (see spark-plug wires, etc).

With as expensive as carbon/kevlar ones are, I'd hesitate to get one - I've had one too many instances of dropping the stick in the water while moving on the H16 and hearing that horrible "crack" as it splits. $110 or so for a hotstick sucks but $400 for a carbon stick is worse!

Yuri- I did the same thing when I started sailing. You just naturally know which way to turn it eventually. I always extend the stick before going out on the wire, then adjust it for comfort once out.

Carbon tillers are not class legal because Carbon is a really good conductor. Carbon is used in spark plug wires because of this. Too bad because the carbon tillers are really light, and stiff.

Kevlar is not a good electric conductor, but it is not very stable in the sun.

Anyone had problems with their cork ball coming off the Hot Stick? Mine came off the last time out. The glue and some cork stuck to the stick, so it was the cork that separated.
