Started out with a 79/80 that had tequilla sunrise sails. I call it 79/80 because the HIN says one and the ohio title says the other. Pretty worn out, didn't have and soft spots at first. Then I made the mistake of stepping on the decks the first time I rigged it. Heard some terrible crackling sounds.

So far I'm $2300 in the hole. Not too bad. In the year I've had my boat I haven't found anything newer than an 83 within 200 miles of me. Even then the 83 I found went for $1800 and had original sails.

I could have picked up a 95 MC Scow for 3,200, but sail looked tiny and the mast reminded me of a chopstick.

I probably could have gone further and found something a little better, but what the heck. I passed the point of no return a while ago.

She ought the be halfway competitive as a B Fleet boat. If nothing else it will last me until I find a nice mid 90's boat in Ohio. Really don't want to deal with the out of state title issues.

Here's what I've done so far:

New trampoline - of the evil ebay amish type. I'm actually fairly happy with it.

Most of the standing rigging.

Brand new sails.

Gently used running rigging.

3:1 Downhaul

Rewired the entire trailer

Built a sailtube.

Picked up the port hull off an 88.

Epoxied my starboard 79/80 hull.

New single trapeze setup.

6:1 mainsheet blocks.

Rebuilt the rudder cams.

A polish and a few dozen coats of wax

Anyhow, on my shopping list are the following.

More modern jib blocks and cleats
*Hotstick
*Aussie jib halyard
*Remote jib traveler controls
*Newer adjustable rudder castings and epo's to combat my wicked weather helm and hum.
*A blue 88 hull to match the one I've got sitting at my parents' house.

So what's next, and why? What will make the boat easier/more fun to sail.

Make that 2520.31 if you include registration and titling fees for the boat and the trailer.

T-X-T.

I'm in Louisville and looking for local events to sail in. I bought my 79/80- about 4 years ago, and so far, I refuse to add up the total $investment$ of updating. I've done about everything on your list, except the sail tube and new sails. My new position is I'm going to sail her till something breaks and then I'll put more money into the boat.

Where are you sailing?? Always looking for a place...not sure I want to spend too much time on the River though.

Paul

We sail at Hueston Woods, in Oxford, Ohio. On any given sunday there are 5-6 Hobie 16's on the water and usually one 17.

That's a bit of a haul for you.
