What to do with $500

My 16 is quite old and could use a lot of new parts
I have 500 dollars to spend on the boat and am wondering what i should spend my money on. Any Suggestions?

My traveler and traveler car is the stupidest system i have ever seen. It is just a little traveler car attatched to two lines, both go to the oposite side of the boat, and cleeted into jam cleets. Its ridiculous, you cant even move the traveler while sailing because the sail pulls the line into jam cleet so tight.
What would be the cheapest and best way to get a better traveler system

Also ive been thinking about those anti pitchpole planes because im out in the ocean most of the time. Does anyone know if those things work. Theyre 115 bucks. IT seems like i could make those things myself for alot less.

First and foremost ,replace all the standing rigging.Then check the condition of the tramp and sheets,there goes your $500+.

Murrays has a Hobie 16 traveler upgrade kit on page 22 of their catalog to retro-fit to a cam cleat system (I didn't see an upgrade kit in the hobie catalog, but they also have all the individual components). Cost is listed at $140. Will make your life much easier.

$115 for anti-pitchpole planes sounds a little pricy. Maybe just get a good righting line instead.

Sounds like you have an old school traveler. Is your car a slug of plastic, a piece of stainless steel with one hole, or a piece of stainless with two plastic rollers under it and a hinge under that?

You may just need the cleat if you have the correct car. That will save you about $100.

I had the anti dive plains on my 16 for at least the last 5yrs I owned to boat, I really couldn't tell you if they made any difference. If I was going to make them I would make them wider to provide more lift when the go under water.

If I remember correctly your boat does not have a traveler track. If so you will need to buy one and rivet it on the cross bar. drill out the old jam cleats on the cross bar throw them away, you will also have to buy a traveler car. So what I suggest is to buy a used cross bar on E Bay, it will probably come with a traveler car. As for the bow planes do not buy, just practice sailing a beam reach till you get the feel of how your boat reacts in the water. this is the fun of a sixteen.

Don't worry about the traveler. Sail the boat as much as you can. Keep an eye out for an 84 or newer boat. You get : a lighter boat, adjustable rake rudders and a usable traveler. Not to mention that the older boats were prone to soft spots.

Don't sink a bunch of money into this boat. You'll do much better saving money, buying a newer boat and selling the old one.

i just want to get the boat up to standard before i sell it. I am plannin on keeping the boat for a year or 2 atleast

The boat is functional now altough not slick. You can put the $500 into it but it is still an old boat. When you go to upgrade in two years you probably won't get the $500 back out of it. You will probably just get about what you paid.

Sail it and have fun. If you locate an 84 or newer use the $500 plus what you get for your boat to get the 84. You would be way further ahead.

I tell people this all the time but no one ever listens. They seem to have a sentimentality for their current boat that prevents them trading up.

Well, I do like my boat .......
Its got vibrant blue hulls. You cant beat that. Too much personality to get rid of!...

But Seriously. That is the plan anyway. Upgrade to a better boat when the oppurtunity arises. Gotta save some money first. I have decided to only Replace what is neccisarry and not buy any fancy upgrades

Just gotta tell myself not to put anymore money into the boat. But when i get that paycheck... Money just seems to be burnin a whole in my pocket sometimes. Cant help myself
