Trap stays

I'm going to screw some fairleads to the bottom of my side rails to keep the trap wires from moving fore and aft and getting tangled together. Is there an ideal location for trap stays with a double trap setup?

Read "Does Tramp color Matter?" a few posts below and you will see a picture of some tramp stays attached to the outer lip of the hulls. The new tramps have grommets in them where the bungees go to keep them foreword and out of the way.

Yeah I've seen that photo before. While I'm sure it is quite functional it might be a little overkill for my purposes. I just wanted to locate a couple stays underneath the side rails and was looking for someone who had already done this. I'm looking for placement to keep dogbones from whacking me in the teeth all the time I'm not actually using them. Maybe someone with the newer tramp can measure the hole location.

The holes are on either side of the shroud, in the reinforcing strip at the edge of the tramp. They're about 6 inches apart.

However, most people don't use the aft one for the skipper as it severely restricts the person on that wire from getting towards the back of the boat. You want that one loose.

This is what I did on my new boat (an '07 that came without grommets in the tramp):


The skipper's trap has a "parking place" on the sidebar, where there's no carpet. It will stay there until you grab it to hook up.

I don't quite follow you here. Are you saying the skipper would not use the aft grommeted trap or the crew wouldn't use it? Or neither should use it unless double trapped? From your own custom set-up in the photo it would appear that the grommeted trap would be the most restrictive. As skipper I assume you would use the loose, parked one?

I use the trampoline grommets as built and have never had a problem getting to the back of the boat. It does get in the way of crew if they are new and unfamiliar with getting out on the wire. When I ordered my boat I also ordered the spare parts kit that came with bungee hooks, but the dealer made the bungees up with the hog nose clamps and shrink tubing so I put the hooks on the end of the trapees rope as an adjustable stop. Then when I want to keep the handles from swinging around I hook onto the j & h loops as shown below.



This works pretty well for me with the J&H handles, I don't know why it wouldn't work with a dog bone.

The crew uses the one that goes through the grommet.

The skipper uses the one that's free on the sidebar.

When neither are trapping, the wires are as shown.

Got it, thanks. Just curious...what is the blue line on your shroud wire? Also, what advantage is the double rope lock on one of the trap lines?

The blue line is the jib traveller line (controls the jib traveller on the opposite side of the boat). I like the idea of putting that through a grommet, although I'd put a knot on the top as well as the bottom to keep it from running back under the boat when going downwind (and the travellers are out = slack in the line).

The double rope locks keep them from distorting and eventually breaking. Having one break is not pleasant. "Depth charge" comes to mind.
