One of the easiest materials to use is Marine Tex. It is a highly filled epoxy that bonds well to fiberglass and gel coat. Clean the 'ding' area with a ScotchBrite pad or similar and some acetone, mix the filler and CAREFULLY trowl it over the spot. If you make a pass with the putty knife back and forth a few times you will 'burp' out any air at the bottom. On the last pass, smooth the Marine Tex as best possible with the surrounding hull. It is very dense when cured and tough to sand. You can leave it as cured, or shape into the surrounding surface and finish with gel coat, paint, 'Will Sail For Food' sticker, whatever you like. DO NOT use silicone as a filler as it will contaminate the exposed fiberglass fibers and make bonding of any other material difficult.
