how to trapeze

I just got a Hobie 16 and haven't trapezed before.What do you connect the harness to?? and can you adjust the length or something. any tips will help or pictures.

Hobie Mirage Classic

I have gone out on the trapeze and typically hold onto the shroud on the way out. After I am comfortable, I release the shroud, but trapeze line seems to want to swing me to the back of the boat w/ great force. Is something setup on the trapeze wires wrong? Is this common to have the momentum send you backwards?

Hook up, drop your butt off the side, and push out with your legs-front leg first. And that's not a smartass post. Once you learn to do that you have your hands free to sail the boat. I have no idea what's going on on the holding shroud thing unless you are really holding on tight with your hand, which requires a counter force with your legs and then when you release your hand there you go.

I don't understand how you could be pulled toward the stern of the boat. When hooked up, your weight should tend to swing you forward toward the mast. That is why Tom King's post said push off with the front leg first. Are the bungee cords run under the tramp correctly? That is the only other thing that could cause a force to pull you.

Practice on the beach.

You can run through everything on land including holding onto the lines and tiller. Get the trap lines set to the correct length and make sure your harness fits right before going out. Sort out all the issues before getting on the water where you'll be trying to control the boat at the same time as getting used to being on the wire.

yeah, I'm new to trapping too, but here's my 2 cents. If you have the mast raked way back, you will tend to swing back, I've noticed. I also clipped a carrabeaner on the front most lace between my tramp wedges near the mast and ran my bungees through those. That seemed to help a lot. Beyond that, went out today in 20+ knot gusty winds and double trapped until my handle broke and I couldn't get in or out as easy... Mast not raked quite so far back now, and I don't have any trouble with it.. My crew on the other hand seems to have problems.... WIDER STANCE!!!! (yelling at him, not you... lol)
