Painting a Hobie in the condition that yours is in, in my opinion, is a big mistake. Unless you do the prep like a pro, epoxy prime, repair the substrate to flawless condition, etc, It's going to eventually flake off. Then the first time you sail it it's going to get scratched and the 'yellow' gel coat is going to show through. They look great painted for about 6 months to a year, but then it goes downhill, and complicates repairs.

I won't even broker a boat that's been painted. It's one of the fastest ways to devalue a boat in my opinion.

But...people do it. So who am I to say?

I just painted a set of off-road rims flat black with AwlGrip and it's as tough as nails, just not tough enough for Hobies.

You've got a really nice boat though, and I"d think twice.

Is this true with all cats or just Hobie's? Because I see many Nacra's with custom paint jobs on the beach.

Ok you sold me. I go with gelcoat.

So how do I match old gelcoat to the new stuff? I've never done gelcoat. Any way to get the old gelcoat looking like new?

And how do I get the crappy old decals and pinstripe off and still restore the gelcoat?

Thanks again for the great advice guys. I almost made a huge mistake.

Maury

P.S. Sounds like you got an even better deal than I got Rojoyinc. My sails are in great condition. They are the blue and red sails. Bule at the bottom and top and red in the middle. I like them very much.

You only need a little gelcoat in the immediate area of your repair. You can buff the rest so it looks new. There is a thread or two here with a link showing the results- makes them look new!

I would carefully heat the decals and stripes with a heat gun and peel them off. Or, if the stripes are in good shape but just faded, just remove the decal and paint over the stripes with some colored spray enamel. That is what I did. Mine were faded gray, silver, black. Leaving the stripes makes a nice edge to apply painter's tape.

Thanks for the info Alan.

Your boat stripes look great!

I am a little confused though. You are recommending that I paint the stripes on instead of using decals?

I thought paint was not preferred on Hobies.

I think the point was that paint all over the hulls doesn't hold up well (in addition to adding much weight to what may be a very light boat). I believe he just painted on the stripes.

I agree with all the above. I would suggest:

Take all the striping off the boat using a razor aided by a heat gun (careful!) or hair drier.
Repair the delam section using polyester resin as indicated earlier
Fill in gelcoat chips using a product Hobie sells that matches the gelcoat color almost exactly (you will get some differences due to fading). You just need to purchase catalyst and it forms into a nice putty that can fill in other chips
Compound the boat well and/or wet sand it then compound and seal it. That will bring much of the color back
Add new graphics of your choice. You again have options here:
There is a post somewhere in this list that indicated they knew of a dealer that had older striping kits. Unfortunately I couldn't find it in a quick search
Go to a sign shop and aske them to cut you new graphics and/or striping to your taste
Purchase new graphics from a Hobie dealer

Should be a great project! Have fun, I think you scored a great deal

Thanks! I'll do that.
