Thanks for the info!

What classes are there for Hobie 16's / what races are they eligible for? seems quite confusing, seems like there are 2 or 3 different race types?

do they all have the same regulations as far as what you can have on the boat?

ya'll are really resourcefull, thanks fore verything already

Well, it depends . . .

You're in Hobie Class Assoc. Division 5 - they have ~6 regattas a year held in lakes in CO, SD, NE and WY. These are HCA Santioned points regattas. For these, your boat has to be "class legal" according to the International Hobie Class Assn. Class Rules (http://www.hobieclass.com/site/hobie/ih ... 090708.pdf)

There are about 100 of these points regatta held across the country each year. You earn points based on your finishing position and number of boats you compete against. Points totals for the entire North American Region are posted on the HCA-NA website (http://www.hca-na.org)

There are also "open" regattas, typically run by yacht clubs. Technically, your boat needs to be class legal in these events, too, but they tend to turn a blind eye to some details in order to build attendance. Often, there won't be enough boats of a particular type to form a separate class, so they are raced on handicap. Handicapping is imprecise at best and unfair at worst. Most catamaran sailors prefer to race one-design, where all the boats are (theoretically) identical. That's the purpose of the IHCA class rules.

I went to a Race in san diego with my Salty Dog Marina Rigging, My non hobie tramp, My old hobie sail with no numbersn(not quite sure if it really is hobie but it is tequila sunrise and has hobie sailmaker patch on it) and no one said one word about it. They had me tape a #1 on the sail in black duct tape. that was all that was said. I dont know but maybe ppl dont think its that big of a deal unless its an important race

SSSHHH... All it takes is that 4th place guy to get disgruntled and protest you and you're out. Anyone can protest you. I'd keep it on the down low...

im not too worried about it. my racing skills are a joke anyways. On a 71 h16 with 30yr old sails, no performance parts, and 1 rudder thats missing the bottom 3 inches (broke off when rudder dropped down as i was backing it down the launch ramp).

Plus i had no idea what was going on the whole time i just followed the other boats and tried to keep up with everyone. The A fleet lapped me  ... on most of the races
