Am I supposed to have a line coming off the trap line that helps your fore and aft stability when hiking? I've caught glimpses of such a thing on utube, but have yet to get my hands on any detailed info on the subject. It's probably here somewhere, but ...

Not directly attached to the trap line, but something called a "chicken line" can be run from the rear of the boat to hold onto. Look for that or "reaching line". Typically only used when on a fast reach when stuffing the bow is possible.
