I just picked up a second Hobie and I am hoping to put 2 bad ones together and make one good one. Here is what i have:

1979 Hobie
Hulls- Soft spots/cracks (what should I do with these? try to sell them? trash them? I dont even know how to trash something this big)
Sails are great
Mast is Great
Trampoline is good
Trampoline castings/crossbars are good
Rudder assembly is good (black rudders)

1989 Hobie
Hulls are solid as a rock
Sails are poor
Mast is great
One side of the trampoline is ripped
Trampoline castings/crossbars are good but they are very very sloppy. Not sure why but when I left up one hull the entire boat twists. could be from the ripped trampoline but im not sure.
Rudder assembly is good (white rudders)

Can I just unbolt the 4 bolts that appear to hold the pontoons to the trampoline assembly and switch them between the two boats? Is there any difference between the 1979 and the 1989 trampoline/rudder/mast/etc assemblies? Or should I just take whatever seems to be in the best shape and put it together. Is there any difference between the white rudders and black ones?

Once I get one good boat I am going to part the rest of the parts out. Any suggestions as far as pricing for:

The mast
Rudder assembly
Trampoline crossbars/corner castings

Thanks in advance!

All of the parts are(started out) the same dimension. The older hulls might be a bit heavier but not all that much. You should be able to mix and match the parts just fine.

Any suggestions on how to get the old hulls separated from the trampoline assembly? The 1979 had plastic nuts that I was able to undo by hand. One pontoon slipped right out with no force but the second hull doesnt want to budge.

Could be glued together. If so, a bit of heat (not too much) should do the trick. You should use a rubber mallet. There are several threads about this topic.

Anyone know which rudders are better? Black plastic from the 1979 or the white ones from the 1989?

I doubt your 1979 had black plastic. Black plastic (nylon) is probably the worst rudder Hobie made, it tends to break right where you see the moulded plastic lines near the holes. But these rudders to my knowledge became available later than 1979. I would definitely go with the white. I don't know of any white bad rudders. Choose your corner castings also. Pick ones whithout cracks and those that have no loose rivets, are they the same annodized color ? Take the time to align your hulls and rudder system properly. Tension the trampoline lacing very tight, and consider buying new rigging (stays) for the boat.

Maybe the black ones were installed later but it had the black ones when I bought it. They are also in much better condition so maybe I will use these until they break and then switch to the white ones. All the corner castings from the 1989 are black but the rivets are loose. I am using the entire silver trampoline assembly from the 1979. Can I sell the castings/crossbars from the 1989 even though the rivets are loose or no? Can the trampoline assembly be painted black or will this scratch too easily? How do I align the hulls/rudder system?
