Thank you, good post.

Anyone have any recommendations for recreation use with just family on camping trips? From research it seems like I should use Bzzz for sheets and control lines, and something like Excel D12 for main and jib halyard. What should I use for the tramp lacing? Any recommendations on where to buy it?

Would this be good for the Halyards?

http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?pat ... &id=824641

This for the trampoline

http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?pat ... 7&id=36493

This for main sheet

http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?pat ... 7&id=36196

And this for the jib sheet

http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?pat ... 7&id=36705

Anyone else want to suggest better deals/better products? After I buy them do I just cut them to the appropriate size and then put this on the end? http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?pat ... 8&id=32885

A rough calculation puts me at around $130, is that about normal?

Suggestions: FSE Robline racing sheet or Racing Sheet Pro for main ad jib. 8 plait line 5mm for Halyards. The white cheap 1/4" stuff in the Hobie catalog for lacing. Call your local Hobie dealer and he'll hook you up usually for less than the bigger marine stores... and you'll get the right lines.

Excellent I will most definitely give them a call. Do you have any suggestions for products made by New England ropes? I have heard their Bzzz lines are good for main/jib sheet but I dont know what to order for everything else. I found out today that I can get their products at a discount through my fathers work. Thank you

Also, can you explain why those lines would be bad? I read the on-the-wire article and it suggest polyester double braid for durability and price.

In my opinion, those lines are too 'waxy' for main and jib sheets. They will also tend to kink and knot.

There's lots of different types of polyester. Jeremy's right - those lines are too slick for sheets that you have your hands on all the time.

The grand-daddy of sheets is Samson Trophy Braid. It came stock on Hobies for years and years.

If you want to spend a bit more money, go with Bzzz line or Salsa from New England Ropes.

For the sheets right? How much is a avg price for the Bzzz or Salsa? What would you recommend for the halyards/tramp lacing? New England V100?

5 or 4mm 8-plait dingy for halyards. Cheap 1/4 inch line from Hobie catalog for tramp. Not much lasts longer.

Look - you need to take a little initiative here. I don't sell line, and I'm not going to run around looking up line prices for you.

I run a 2-year old, fully race rigged Hobie 16 (my 6th one in 36 years), so what lines & how much $$$ I would spend on my boat is drastically different than what you'd put on yours.

You really need to talk to someone face-to-face (like a Hobie dealer and / or an experienced Hobie sailor).

Woah, sorry I asked. I just didn't want to go to some dealer, have them sell me some line for $2 a foot and then come home to realize other places sell the same stuff for 50 cents a foot.

Jeremy,
Why am I not finding the Zhik pfd's on your website and are they now coast guard approved for Hobie racing?

Because it's a top secret, forum and facebook only sale. You've got to call and make small talk (or email).

They are not US coast guard approved.
Approved to European CE standard EN 393 50 N.

Shoot me an email: [email protected]

Don't be sorry you asked!!!!

Matt was not being a turd!!! The truth is, everybody will spend a different amount for their sheets depending on needs, wants and budget.
I seriously doubt that a Hobie dealer would do a 250% markup on any product. If you find a product you like, look it up on the web and you will find what is a fair price.

When I first got my 73 h16 four years ago, the entire main sheet setup needed to be replaced. What to buy? I took about three solid days(needed it in a hurry) researching on the web. I read the info I could find here and on Catsailer.com forums. I picked a price point and researched some more. I knew the boat I had would not last that long, but also knew I was going to want to keep what ever I bought for several years. Not sure if I just got lucky with my choice or not but I can I did get what I feel to be some really nice line and blocks. Will I buy the same line next time, I can't say, but I will have do to my own bit of research all over again, because this rig should out last even what is currently on the market today. The only UV rays that the sheet sees is when it is actually on the boat while I am sailing it, the rest of the time, it is in my rigging bag either in the RV or the house.

I guess what I am tryiing to say is, this is a very personal choice and as Matt said, there is no perfect right answer for everybody. Yes, it is confusing and there are a ton of choices in any price range but in the end, only you can decide what is right for you.

FYI, as most everybody on these forums have read over the last four years, I chose this, http://tinyurl.com/yhvkerk awesome stuff IMO.
Now, for my Jib sheet, I picked a very cheap black line from Lowes. It has spent every day of the last 4 years in our crazy line destroying sun here in NM and is still in great shape.
