I just acquired a Cheetah motor mount on a junk 16 I bought. I have no info on it what motors can be used with it? I sail on Lake Michigan and would really like the safety of being able to get home in a dead wind. Is it worth the hassle?

i use a 2.5 merc on my 16 with the cheeta... i usually sail alone and get worried the wind will die.... it has enabled me to go out on days i normally would have passed up on.... if you adjust it right it stays out of the way../

I'd be too afraid of flipping my boat and killing the motor.

I should think any 2-3.5 HP motor should fit fine.

I got a Cheetah mount last winter, but haven't put it on the boat yet. In the upper Chesapeake, where I sail, the winds are notorious for dying off in the afternoon and a motor seems to be good insurance. Also, there are few good public launch sites and a motor will help us navigate the marinas to get out to the bay. Just need to get the motivation to mount the Cheetah.

The manufacturer recommends no more than a 3hp and/or 30 lb. motor to be used with the mount. I found an old 3hpTanaka/Gamefisher motor that weighs 24 lbs. that should work well. If you look around, you may be able to find a 1.2 or a 1.75 Tanaka/Gamefisher motor that will weigh substantially less than the 3hp model.

I googled Cheetah motor mount and the only thing that comes up is reference to it on this site. Who sells it? Where can I get one? What do they cost? Anyone have a used one they want to sell?

I used the Cheeata motor mount on my 16 with a 3HP Merc @ 28 lbs. A hobie 16 sits pretty low in the water My motor went under many times but seems to survive. I carried extra fuel in a small camping stove fuel bottle from Dicks Sporting goods or REI
Always carry a extre spark plug and starting fluid
Make sure to tie a rope from the motor to the boat
Still have the motor after 22 years on my Hobie 21 SE

Have a look at the Honda 2hp air cooled motor, its the motor 99% of out cheetah customers end up with.
