Coolers on board

I am looking for a good cooler to go on my boat. Anyone have any good subjestions? Thanks.

What kind of cooler are we talking about? We have a couple soft coolers shown in the kayak catalog (page 27)... thats it.

i was thinking one that could hook on my tramp. A flat style that wouldn't really get in the way.

Our coolers are soft, but lack and hooks to attach to a trampoline. We no longer have anything like that.

check out the cooler in the kayak catalogue, you can use the strap to go under the tramp lacing to secure.

Wonder why Hobie both knows people want coolers for tramp boats of which there are hundreds of thousands , and also does not offer such a potential hot seller?

Because... they weren't actually hot sellers.

I find that the cooler in the Hobie Catalogue works well. You might have to come up with your own system to attach it to the tramp but that is not difficult. The cooler has a couple pouches and built well. I had several of the original Hobie cool cats they were OK but really this cooler they have now is worth checking into. I think it is better than the original.

Back in the 80's I had a Hobie 16 with a metal cooler holder that clamped the the cross beam in front of the mast. It held a Igloo Playmate cooler (very common at the time and I still have one) and you could loosen a strap and open the top while sailing. It worked great for lake sailing but I did have some issues in the big waves at the beach with it burrying in the waves. It was a great location because it got it off of the tramp for more room to move around.

Get a soft side cooler size depending on you drinking habits I use a SS carbine hook attached to tramp lacing to the strap on the cooler. My cooler holds about 18 can drinks with room for ice and a few snacks.
Hobie used to sell a cool cat cooler used to work pretty good again it was a soft side cooler with plastic hooks to attach to the tramp lacing
A friend used to have a cooler rack that attached to the front crossbar and the striker post
This was a really bad idea in high winds and big waves it would keep the crew and captain pretty wet.

I found a fiberglass holder built specifically for the older 16qt Playmate cooler ~15"x10" (the older model with the lock button on the side vice the top on the handle on the new ones) on eBay and so far it's been great. I think I paid about $40 for it.

It has pre-drilled slots and holes to attach it to the dolphin striker and dolphin striker support bar with small u-bolts (that I supplied). I'm no racer and I sail on the Chesapeake, so I don't encounter the rough water of the ocean and I'm not terribly worried about speed, most of the time .

This thing is solid and holds a full cooler perfectly, and off the tramp.
