It's not entirely clear I know, but picture a piece of webbing that is tubular instead of flat, and inside that is a piece of shock cord. The webbing is longer than the shock cord so it bunches up all along from one end to the other. That's so that it gives you some length to pull it down and away while the bungie stretches with you.

Ahhhh I see what you mean about the "webbing"....makes much more sense now. Ill have to invest into one!

The best, most efficient righting system is also the simplest... A fat hollowbraid line tied around the dolphin striker post and stored in the tramp lacing ready for deployment. All new 16s, Tigers and Wildcats come with this system.

yep... and it doesn't bang against the boat driving me crazy while trying to sail... :D

I agree. I used the internal shock cord kind for a while. Maybe I didn't have it installed just right in the front, but in some conditions it would catch waves and toss spray. (I can't stand anything unnecessary hanging below tramp level). I also dislike the feeling of not knowing when the stretch will end. Several times I thought it was fully stretched, but when I leaned hard it gave more, making me lose balance and/or putting me in the water. Finally, particularly if it's run outside the shrouds, the shroud ring dings must be taped very well and inspected often.....that line will tangle with them and jerk 'em right out!

Great input all.

Jeremy your point is well taken. And it got me thinking (DANGEROUS), wouldn't the same logic for tying off to the dolphin striker also apply to tying to the base of the shroud itself? Just for the sake of leverage, wouldn't pulling on the mast directly, by way of the shroud, provide the best mechanical advantage you could hope for? Or tying off to a trap line?

Again, just speaking to leverage here only, I realize storing such a line while underway or connecting such a line while downed would be an issue, but I would think that pulling from that location would be the strongest point to pull from. Just a thought.

How about a much shortened version of what I pictured above, only it would tie off to the shroud base and run side-to-side. When downed you would reach up and pull on this and you would be pulling down on the shroud itself.

Just thinking out loud here folks, shoot holes in it!!!! :lol: :shock:
