Trapeze:

I'd suggest getting a double-trapeze set unless you ONLY sail alone. This will have:

* Two wires per side that hang from where the shrouds connect to the mast.
* One pulley/adjuster set per wire.
* One ring per wire - I suggest getting the J & H or other "soft" ones - the metal ones are hard on the head when not trapped out.
* One bungee per pair of wires. The bungee connects opposing wires beneath the trampoline to keep tension on them when you are not using them.

You can probably get it all in a set (ask for different colors of handle or trap wire so you can tell the crew wire from the skipper's); I don't have a catalog handy - does anyone know the part no.?

As for the chip, you can drill a series of small holes partially into the cup in the mast base (don't remove too much material!). The chip will catch in the holes and not squirt out.

http://www.murrays.com/archive/archive.html#anchor73592

Pages 48, 49 and 52 for trap wire, handles and adjusters.

Most of us use handle E.

Page 44-47 is harnesses. Page 46 was info on trapezing basics.

I would suggest you go to www.catsailor.com and get into the forums there. The open is good and there is also one on the 16. Go to the online store and get Rick White's "Catamaran Racing for the 90's" whether you race or not. It will teach you more than you can learn in the years on your own. We also have a good forum on our site www.tcdyc.com. I am Hobie17 there. PM in if you join.

Hope this helps and welcome to the fun world of sailing and the Hobie Way of Life.

Doug, thanks for the info. In the Murrays catalog, which harness(s) would you recommend for a beginner? I'm using a Stohlquist Drift pfd.

Much appreciated...

AE

Alan:

The question is doing you want extra back support? Is you spend a lot of time on the wire or plan to do any distance races, I would go with a full harness. As for which brand is better I would start a thread on the www.catsailor.com in the new open forum. You should also join and ask here:

Go onto our site sometime. We also have a pretty good forum. I am Hobie17 there. PM me your user name when you do. www.tcdyc.com
