Could you use the jib to raise the mast?

That is still the most accepted method. This discussion is on actually using the Jib sail to raise the mast. With your method you have to hook everything up, raise the mast, unhook it all and then raise the jib.

With this method, we only hook up the jib, and raise the mast and you are done. You would want to hook up the forestay, just as a safety backup.
