i sail in the winter here on LongIsland ny. after a lot of trying different gloves we found the best gloves are $4.00 PVC gloves with thin glove liners. this gloves give you great grip on your sheets and tiller. http://www.seattlemarine.net/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=1792&idcategory=982.

the only problem is water can get into the gloves.

you can see my friend wearing this gloves in blue in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5umQeB07vE

we have our gloves sealed to the drysuit so no water can get in

if you are interested to seal the cloves to your drysuit i have a $15 way that work well

Took the Tiger out for a sail last March 13th, the air temp was 39deg F, water temp was 39 deg F. We actually did go over, I had a 5-4mm wetsuit on with spray pants and top on, 7mm boots; my crew had a drysuit on, water wasent too bad. Just don't get it on your face, instant ice cream headache!!!

Since the sailing in Utah is best during the fall, My Dad and I will go out until it's around 45 degrees F. It gets a little cold, but the flying is the best!

When I was younger-maybe dumber- I used to sail the Cheaspeake Bay and Eastern shore till late November, sometimes as late as Christmas. The water would get pretty cold late in the year, but air in the 60's would lure me out.
Nowadays, I keep the boats on Hatteras and when the temps drop, I rationalize not sailing 'til spring. Still go out till about Thanksgiving, but most years, it's relatively warm here and the shallow waters in the sound don't get too cold. Guess maybe my body's getting old- for sure not my mind!

You can buy a dry suite for around 500.00 now. one with out a tunnel. well worth it! way warmer than a wet suite. :D
