Let me clarify something, maybe I had a hard time fabricating my tramp because of my construction method. I underfolded the bolt rope and grommet edges to tuck under the mesh edge and also inserted and sew a 2" nylon webbing to add strenght all around the perimeter inside the fold (cant see it)...That way the spur grommets had more material to bite with the teeth.

The old tramp I have and used as pattern just was folded once very simple and sewn with the mesh edge exposed and frayed.
I dont think this old one is hobie brand and the hobies tramps are heat sealed not sewn ...I wanted to improve on this.

Wish I could post pics but I dont have a digital and my internet connection is the slowest. Will someday, on a huge post of all repairs made to my H16.

Guys:

Sun if the biggest killer to all the things on the boat. That is why I keep mine inside now. Keep them coverd and they will last a long time. I love my mesh tramp from Sunrise.

I agree, but some of us leave the boat in the sun all season. I use a cheap
blue tarp to cover the tramp. It measures a little over 7' by 9'. It is
hooked to the boat with four bungee cords.

I just recently replaced my blue tarp because the sun had destroyed it. Better a $7 tarp than a $400 tramp!

I just broke down and bought a new tramp from my local dealer in CT. I ordered a bunch of parts from him so he gave me free shipping as well. I didn't feel like screwing around with stitching problems five years down the road with the aftermarket tramps either...

Thanks for your help guys.

I hope you're right Nick!

I placed the order yesterday a 4:45 PM and received all of my goods today by 1 PM... now that's impressive for free shipping!!! I can't say enough good things about this transaction with Scott Hardy @ www.boatlocker.com ! I ordered some odd-ball items with this order and he had everything in stock... not to mention he set me up with a sweet new Magic Marine Pro Mesh harness for $50 less than I could find it elsewhere on the Internet. Super nice guy to deal with as well... A+ in my book.

Anyway, any tips for installing the new tramp (which looks awesome BTW!)???

That is quick... At 4:45pm, my UPS guy has already picked up. It would have taken me two days.

Tramp installation is cake. Get all the pieces slid into the rails. Sometimes we hose down the rails with some McLube to make it easier to slide the tramp, but on an older boat that shouldn't be needed. Center up the back strip and make sure the two fron pieces are slid has far back as you can get them.

Now, take the aft lacing line. Tie it to the outside gromment on one side. Run it to the rear cross bar, back to the grommet and back to the bar. Yuo've not got a 3:1 purchase. Pull it snugly. I usually put a foot on the rear bar. Tie it off. Repeat on the other side.

Grab the center lacing line and a pair of visegrips. Start with a bowline in the front grommet on the left side. Run it back and forth a few times between the two sides. Now start pulling the slack out. When you get to the last grommet the line runs through, use the visegrips to pinch the line against the tramp to hold it while you thread some more grommets. Repeat till you get to the end.

Now pick a side. Do the after lacing. Use the visegrips as necessary. Do the other side. Tie off the ends with 1/2 hitches.

If the tramp is tight enough for you, go sailing. But in about 2 months or 6 good sessions, you'll probably want to pull the slack out of the center lacing.

Cake.

Thanks Brian!

I hope to tackle the tramp this coming weekend (if time allows). Your directions should be helpful as I've never changed a tramp before.

I assume the tramp frame does not have to be removed from the boat, correct? I'm kind of surprised Hobie doesn't have directions for doing a tramp replacement (with pics) online...

Correct. There are openings like on the mast to get the tramp bolt ropes threaded into the front, side and rear bars.

Actually, I am too. I thought I remembered seeing one. But there are only so many hours in the day and Hobie has Adventure Islands to build.

I've been taking pictures of boat build outs thinking that some day I'd build a "This is how we assemble your Hobie" web page. Maybe sooner is better than later.

You'll figure it out... I did without any assistance with putting the actual tramp in! I had some help with the lacing as it's more difficult to get it nice and tight by yourself.

You do the side rails before the front one.
