My work owns 2 vinyl cutting machines that they use for making signage. They work like a printer or plotter. More like a plotter, actually, except with a blade instead of ink.

I'm not sure what the cost will be with this one... the person who did our signage quit earlier this year and I haven't worked with the new guy who took over. I've made some stickers and other things before though and as long as I helped do the transferring, I only paid for for the vinyl cost which was cheap.

Cutting the vinyl is automated but then there is the manual process of picking out the parts that don't go with the sticker, virtually making the stencil if you will. Then you have to transfer the vinyl to wax type paper so that it's ready to apply to the surface. With big letters, it's really easy.. small stickers are really time consuming.

Thanks for the compliments! I'm not a huge fan of the rainbow stripe, but I love the vivid yellow on the sails... very visible and nice to look at. The boat was a good find... it just needed somebody to love it! I've had it out twice now with my boss... I might take it out solo tonight... hopefully I'm ready to handle it solo.

Any way nice boat when I take mine appart this fall I may paint the hulls like yours I like the yellow and white it looks good.

I read your posts and just had to write I also just got my H16. Mine needed some repairs, I live in Wisconsin and I just love my "new" old boat.
I trust you are sailling on Winabago? How is the sailing? I live north and west but if the sailing is worth it I would come down next summer. PM me if you would like to compair notes.

Yes, I sail on Winnebago. I've only sailed 3 times so far... all last week.. but all three times were a blast! I plan to sail a lot more in the coming weeks so I will have a better description of the conditions then.

Wanted to update this...

I took my hobie out solo for the first time on Saturday in light winds and had a blast! I was a little hung over so I only sailed for an hour and a half and I also had lots of other things to do, so I called it a successful solo and returned to the harbor.

I did make a big mistake as I "planned" my return to the dock... It had gotten a little busy in the harbor as there was some tiny powerboats racing around a course that was on the other side so all the other leisure powerboats were launching at the sailboat launch with is right next to the cat ramp/dock. I was coming in downwind and I just pulled up to the dock and let the main and jib out... but obviously as I sheeted the main out, all it did was pick up more wind.... I grabbed the dock quickly and tied a line off to hold me. The reason I pulled in like that was because the winds being relatively light, I figured it wouldn't be a big deal... and also, the launch area was really busy and I didn't want to hit anyone or screw up if I came in and then came about... if I mis-judged my speed, I might have ended up back sailing into them or something... I don't know.. I probably should have done it the correct way... come in and turn right into the wind and let the sails luff. As soon as I grabbed the dock and felt the wind trying to push me into the launch area, I knew I made the wrong decision. It was a pain to bring the main down in that situation, but I managed.

A lesson learned is how I look at it. I really have more time than I think to make decisions and consider the options.

Oh.. one more question... What is the deal with having to throw my tiller extension around the main sheet pulley setup when coming about... that's really annoying. :P

yeah ive learned that pretty much the only thing to do is turn into the wind. no matter what. it is a pain to do but saves so much work later, and doesnt result in a full on collision with the cement ramp when theres onyl fifteen to 25 feet of dock.

and the tiller, i hated that at first. and now its natural. but its better than small monohull dinghys IMHO, because at least you dont have to move between the main and the tiller with only two feet to move. on the cat you got 7 to 8 feet to move, and plenty of area to move the tiller around the main while still holding both. its just roomier. like a cadillac. a really fast cadillac. with a jet engine attached.

So.... I've noticed that I'm picking up quite a bit of water in my port hull when out on the water.. even for just an hour and a half... On a slight incline, like my storage dock is... the water runs out the drain plug without lifting the front... I've looked around on the hull and I really don't see anything that would jump out as a place where the water is leaking in... I have not tipped it on it's side though, so I suppose there could be something right on the bottom of the hull that is out of view when sitting on the dock or trailer.

I have yet to capsize the boat at all... and I've drained it almost every time that I've taken it out. The first trip out, I don't recall any water coming out at all.. but since that first trip, I've taken on water in the port hull.

Sounds like it's time to get some soapy water and a low pressure source of air. Blow air into the hull thru the drainplug (no more than a couple of psi), wipe the soap solution around the boat (seams, deck fitting, pylons, etc...) and look for bubbles.

I noticed the same thing. What seemed like a lot of water in both hulls after a short sail. Just for kicks I smeared a little lube on the drain plug O-rings and titend the drain plugs alittle tighter and no water in the hulls after my sail.

hmm... could be the drain plug! I'll definitely make sure they are tight and maybe replace them.

I too ran into a H16 on eBay though. A friend was kind enough to clean her up for me. the result is very cool. I haven't had her in the water yet. That will be a little while yet... I have my hands full getting it all together still... ...not sure if this picture will take...[/img]

Can somebody give me a crash course as to how pictures can be posted? Do they have to be uploaded first to an independent server and using the url as pointer only...?? [/img]
