Matt, I refurbish older Hobies and get them back out on the water and new sailors are getting hooked on the "Hobie Way of Life" I just picked up one that is pre 1973 with the serial number of 4042 stamped into the forward pylons. Is there a chart that converts that serial number to a year? This is the second boat that I have run across recently with the number located there and I was just curious as to age.

The hulls are in remarkably good shape, very stiff all over and very little wear on bottoms. Also I am curious as to how much heavier these vintage Hobies might be.

Nope, although I would think that is one of the later ones, from late '72.

What's the sail number?

The nominal minimum weight back then was 340 lbs. I would expect a boat that old to be in the 350 - 370 range.

Weigh each hull without any hardware on it - new boat's hulls are in the 65-70 lb range.

No problem. The first Hobie Fleet I belonged to was 221 in Richmond.
